Job Description

The Regional Mechanical Discipline Lead (RDL) position will be a key technical leader for the Midwestregion, their respective disciplines, and CRB’s Technical Advancement Group (TAG). The RDL will report to the Sr. Director of Design Operations (SDDO) and will serve as a source of discipline technical risk management for the region and may serve as Senior Level staff technical mentorship/support on selective projects. In this role, individuals will be required to demonstrate a deep understanding of the role of architectural [or] engineering design within the AEC industry and CRB Market types and will display high levels of energy and drive. This position will serve as key position in our organizational structure and will be vital connection between our regional operations and technical operations (TechOps) divisions and may be required to provide project level staffing guidance to the SDDO, regional leadership, and project managers.

This position will assist in management of compliance with architecture [or engineering] licensing laws and regulations governing the practice of architecture [or engineering] within all states in the region, help drive TAG initiatives and engagement, and assume responsibility for numerous regionally focused activities. The RDL will maintain a partnership with regional leadership and discipline staff while functioning as the primary conduit for ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ discipline knowledge sharing to/from TAG and across the region. This role is a great opportunity to lead and develop discipline staff on a regional level while contributing heavily to CRB’s overall technical advancement goals.

The RDL is not responsible for resource assignments, planning, individual staff performance monitoring, individual career growth plans, and annual goal planning/performance reviews, and will not be staffed as a lead or senior level resource on projects supporting production.

Responsibilities

Design Operations and Core Regional Responsibilities (75% of overall time):

  • Provide leadership for respective discipline design staff in offices within the region.
  • Function as the primary point of contact for all regional discipline-related issues and meet regularly with regional leadership, Regional Quality Assurance Director, and regional staff.
  • Cultivate, promote, and maintain a strong discipline-based culture in the region by developing a strong technical network of excellence.
  • Develop and implement a regional training plan to address technical deficiencies in conjunction with TechOps.
  • Partner with Group Leads to support the development of technical career growth paths for the discipline staff.
  • Provide technical mentorship, guidance, and technical risk management for “at-risk” projects to ensure success of project teams.
  • Support the implementation of CRB’s Quality Program acting as a primary resource for the discipline executing key tasks under the quality program through select peer reviews, discipline checking, and/or A&C reviews.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of staff capabilities, project opportunities, and staff availability in the region.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to regional leadership and PMs for project level staffing to ensure broader capabilities for client delivery.
  • Develop and implement a real-time, need-based plan for discipline staff training that targets technical gaps and deficiencies in technical capabilities. Share technical continuous improvement topics across the region.
  • Assist Group Leads and leadership with onboarding, mentorship, and career development for respective discipline staff.
  • Provide a regional perspective to mentorship with the goal of creating a more integrated technical network and cross-office development.
  • Support key project level pursuits as requested.

Core Technical Advancement Group (TAG) responsibilities (25% of overall time):

  • Provide a leadership role within TechOps to develop and implement strategic and tactical plans for the respective discipline under the direction of TAG Director of Architecture or Directors of Engineering. This position will work closely with the TAG leadership group and serve as primary management resource to drive TAG initiatives that support the discipline.
  • Serve as a primary driver of key initiatives that support the discipline including developing training programs, creating systems and procedures, supporting one-solution business market, generating guidelines and templates, and investigating new tools.
  • Drive consistency in the discipline by supporting the development, training and use of standard tools, guides, etc.
  • Develop specific training program for regional staff.
  • Propose new quality checkers (A&C reviewers).
  • Collaborate with other regional RDLs to drive alignment and share knowledge across different offices.

Qualifications

  • Professional Licensure in candidate’s respective discipline, if applicable
  • Minimum ten (10) years professional experience
  • Associate-level employee preferred
  • Approved A&C reviewer and Approved Discipline Checker (where applicable)
