-Agency Only- Microbiologist Supervisor - 2467 (West Boothbay Harbor)Boothbay Harbor , Maine , United States | Management & Supervisory | Full-time Apply by: Aug. 30, 2024 Apply with Linkedin ApplyMICROBIOLOGIST SUPERVISOR-AGENCY ONLY-ONLY DMR EMPLOYEES MAY APPLY- Opening Date:August 19, 2024Closing Date:August 30, 2024Location:West Boothbay HarborPosition #:07200-2467Position Type:Permanent Full TimeClass Code:4216Grade/Salary: Grade 27 (Supervisory) - $65,353.60 - $92,268.80 Per Year(This includes the 5.5% Salary Adjustment) The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking to fill a Microbiologist Supervisor position with excellent laboratory and management skills that is critical to the operation of the Bureau of Public Health and Aquaculture Program in Boothbay.BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:This position is responsible for direct supervision of the water quality and biotoxin laboratories in West Boothbay Harbor which support the shellfish growing area component of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP). This position supervises the laboratory personnel (4 staff members) located in West Boothbay Harbor. DMR is a member of the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference, and this position is responsible for the effective delivery of the NSSP Laboratory Standards for biotoxin and water quality for Maine. This job entails weekly bacteriology laboratory work that results in regulatory microbiological analyses. This position will also provide supervision for the marine biotoxin laboratory and assist with regulatory sample processing and analysis for biological and analytical methods for marine biotoxins. Responsibilities will include:

Quality control and assurance of the West Boothbay Harbor laboratory facility using sound judgement to assist the Growing Area Program Supervisor and Bureau Director with interpreting data and forming valid conclusions.

Ensuring consistency between the microbiology and biotoxin labs located in West Boothbay Harbor with those located in Lamoine.

Regular travel (monthly) to the Lamoine facility.

Coordinating with the Lamoine Growing Area Program Supervisor.

The position may need to work occasional weekends and holidays. Work is performed under limited supervision.For questions specific to the position, please contact the Hiring Manager, Bryant Lewis, at:Bryant.J.Lewis@maine.gov MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A Master's Degree in Microbiology or Chemistry and considerable work experience in supervising bacteriological studies or bio-chemical analysis. Equivalent related work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.Preference will be given to those who have experience with:

Water quality testing using methods such as membrane filtration, multiple tube fermentation and other analyses of sanitary pollution samples using sterile disinfection techniques.

Selecting appropriate analytical procedures, media, and equipment and to develop new protocols when necessary.

The ability to operate, calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, make specialized media or reagents, prepare positive and negative controls or standards to ensure reliability and reproducibility of laboratory results.

Experience with HPLC, PCR and LCMS machines and operations.

Access databases to prepare technical reports and documents to communicate results.

Experience managing a laboratory and laboratory staff.
