Controls Engineer

The Controls Engineer will adopt the culture, standards, and values as outlined by Kennebec Lumber Company’s (KLC) Management team specifically the Maintenance Manager. The Controls Engineer is responsible for day-to-day safety performance, effective planning, coordinating and decision making with the support of the Maintenance Manager to attain desirable production and efficiency results, as well as the overall daily operations in regard to technical, electrical, PLC, and any engineering related functions. Other responsibilities include sustaining relevant knowledge, maintaining professionalism, motivating team members and monitoring production to ensure Quality, Safety and Productivity are meeting or exceeding company standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical assistance in support of projects and manufacturing goals.
  • Provide technical assistance to the Maintenance department as requested in identifying and correcting
non-routine or highly complex equipment problems.
  • Maintain technical documentation and software in direct support of manufacturing and plant facilities.
  • Work alongside the Master Electrician to Design and review designs of plant equipment as they relate to
electrics, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatic and safety issues. Insure the most beneficial application of current technology in these designs.
  • Initiate and support various task teams as required.
  • Experience in industrial control system design and drafting. CAD experience preferred.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains methods, operation sequence and processes in the fabrication of
parts, components, sub-assemblies and final assemblies. Leads manufacturing engineering related projects as required.
  • Interfaces with other engineering functions to coordinate the release of product improvements and/or new
products. Drives manufacturing engineering PLC deliverables. Launches, releases, approves and implements or issues engineering change requests as required to support design engineering and floor with new and existing products.
  • Develops and uses test procedures, including assisting with the definition of test specifications with
design / software engineering. May work with test engineering on the design and development of text fixtures. May assist in the coordination of test fixture sourcing activities.
  • Determines root cause analysis for issues that arise during assembly and/or test of systems; drives
correction actions; provides failure analysis report as required.
  • Evaluates work methods, procedures, and policies. Develops and maintains new business processes; edits
as necessary to ensure current practices are documented. Mentors and trains lower-level engineers.
  • May coordinate outsourcing activities with external / internal suppliers.
  • Product Engineering - Works all phases of a product from concept to repeat manufacturing to end of life.
Provides production support engineering with respect to technically complex testing methods, procedures, and failure analysis.
  • Process Engineering - Designs and develops technically complex processes to improve quality and
efficiency.
  • Travel as needed to other plant sites, which is not limited to staying overnight, and possibly weekends.
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements: Effective Written and Oral communication skills Able to work well with minimal supervision Ability to Prioritize tasks and follow specified procedures 5+ years relevant maintenance experience

Miscellaneous Requirements:
  • Safety First - PPE
  • Hard hat in designated areas of the Planer Mill
  • Hard hat in all areas of the Sawmill and Log Yard
  • Exception being – inside saw cabs, crane cabs, outside forklift machine cabs
  • Steel Toed footwear required in all areas
  • Gloves required in designated areas – per task in either mill
  • Handling Saws – ALWAYS
  • Hear Protection required in all areas
  • Exception being – inside cab of outside machine forklifts
  • Eye Protection required in all areas
  • Face Protection, when necessary, per task
  • Florescent vests required for all outside activity
  • All Outside Machine Operators - Florescent Green / Yellow
  • All Outside Pedestrian activity – Florescent Orange
  • Exception being – pedestrian travel from one building to another
  • Report all near misses and unsafe acts
  • Pedestrian awareness at all times in the area
  • Follow KLC employee handbook policies & procedures

Physical Requirements
  • Bend, stretch & twist occasionally
  • Moderate wrist / hand repetitions
  • Stand or sit for periods of time
  • Reaching, pushing, pulling
  • Lifting 5 – 25lbs
  • Walk on uneven ground at times
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions (below 0 temps to over 90º)
