Medical Science & Computing (MSC), now a Guidehouse company, is searching for a
Clinical Data Standards Vocabulary Mapping and Development Specialist to support the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. The ideal candidate will utilize clinical data standards and have familiarity with Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes, Unified Code Units of Measure, and Fast Health-care Interoperability Resources. This role will help develop the tools and resources needed to standardize and unify medical data from multiple independent sources, while facilitating the use of FHIR at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position reports to the Chief Health Data Standards OfficerThis position is full-time, with full benefits effective your first day of employment, preferably located on-site in Bethesda, MD at the NIH campus post-pandemic. Duties & Responsibilities- Leverage your experience with biomedical terminologies, health data standards and clinical data, along with your knowledge of standard classifications and vocabularies, as well as your experience in data mining biomedical databases and data integration, to utilize data analytical tools to help us develop the resources needed to standardize and unify medical data.
- Gain a working knowledge of the tools and tables employed in the LOINC and UCUM validator and associated tables.
- Facilitate mappings between local names/codes from various sources and the appropriate standard coding system, e.g., to LOINC (tests and measurement) and UCUM (units of measure). Most of this work will involve variables, e.g., tests and measurements, and the LOINC standard, but there could be some need to map medications to the standard for medications (RxNorm).
- Use spreadsheets and/or other tools to manipulate various mappings received, characterize them, and put them into a common format when possible, to facilitate their mapping and/or validation.
- Detect errors in such mappings using software tools and suggest fixes and improvements in the software tools.
- Manage tables that control validation software and improve the tables as experience with mapping indicates the need to do so.
- Research the literature and web sources and work with content experts to determine the meanings of new variables and variables that are incomplete or obscure within the content targeted for mapping.
- Submit requests for new LOINC variables following LOINC guidelines and develop informative three- to five-line descriptions definitions that specify what is being measured and to what purpose based on literature research or discussions with content experts.
- Author and/or participate in writing publications about the above processes and inferences from the large real-world mapping files obtained.
- Develop new classes/subclasses (hierarchies) for specified areas of content as needed for projects, review the literature and other sources, and cite them to justify a particular hierarchy.
- Create and/or update documentation to facilitate the use of the validation tools.
- Participate in LOINC committee meetings and regular meetings regarding the three project areas.
- Perform general editing of content related to the project.
- Advanced degree in a medically related science, such as M.D., Ph.D., D.O., Clinical Genetics, Clinical Chemist or Clinical Microbiologist
- At least one-year experience collecting or analyzing clinical or claims data or managing master tables for medical record or research systems
- Experience with biomedical terminologies, health data standards, and/or clinical data
- Three years of experience with one of the HL7 standards, especially the part of the standard that carries observations and the LOINC and UCUM coding systems employed
- Experience with research databases such as dbGaP
- Familiarity with a broad spectrum of medical vocabularies crossing special fields including research data and familiarity with websites and databases that could clarify the meaning of newly encountered words, e.g., lab catalogue such as Mayo, LabCorp, Quest, ARUP, radiology (Radiopedia), and LOINC
- Experience working with legacy and future technologies to map from old to new data structures
- Experience with the collection and management of clinical data.
- Familiarity with clinical LOINC, Health Level 7 (HL7), and UCUM
- Data manipulation with spreadsheets, statistical software, or Python
- Authorship of scientific publications
