Data Support Specialist II (ES205)
The NASA Earth Science Data and Information Systems (ESDIS) project, headquartered at the Goddard Space Flight Center, supports data systems operations for centers across the US. This includes processing, archival and distribution of data from dozens of satellte instruments over a span of more than 40 years. The data is used for research and applications in a myriad of fields including land processes, oceanographic and atmospheric sciences. This particular task supports the ESDIS Metrics System, which supplies information on Earth Sciences data usage to other government agencies, Congress, state governments, and researchers worldwide.DATA SUPPORT SPECIALIST II JOB FUNCTIONS:- Serve as a support data specialist who is detailed oriented and has analytical skills.
- Compile, analyze and generate reports based on Earth science data ingest, archival, and end-user distribution data available from a relational database.
- Perform special and anomalous metrics analyses/studies.
- Provide system engineering support for development of programs to support data analysis and reporting, e.g., develop scripts to access the metrics database and create summaries for report purposes.
- Provide guidance and solutions for value added reports, process improvements and simplification of the data for reporting purposes.
- Familiarity with remotely sensed Earth science products from the various instruments onboard both NASA and NOAA satellites includingthe NASA Terra, Aqua and Aura missions, the joint NASA NOAA Suomi-NPP mission and airborne missions (e.g, IceBridge)
- Experience organizing and conducting cross-functional group meetings, interfacing with technical groups, such as Science Team members, and in developing technical materials.
- Experience in system software development.
- Experience in querying Oracle databases using SQL.
- Experience in MS office S/W (Excel, Word, Power Point)
- Excellent communication (written & oral), and teamwork skills.
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency Required
- The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in physical sciences
- Has 3-5 years of experience working in an Earth science or environmental science field. Knowledge of remote sensing of geophysical parameters is a plus.
- At least 3 years of experience in system software development
- Solid knowledge of remotely sensed Earth data products and data processing particularly those from NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments
