Earth Science Data Specialist
(ES200)The NASA Earth Science Data and Information Systems (ESDIS) project, headquartered at the Goddard Space Flight Center, supports data systems operations for centers across the US. This includes processing, archival and distribution of data from dozens of instruments over a span of more than 40 years. The data is used for research and applications in a myriad of fields including land processes, oceanographic and atmospheric sciences. This particular task supports the ESDIS Metrics System, which supplies information on Earth Sciences data usage to other government agencies, Congress, state governments, and researchers worldwide.EARTH SCIENCE DATA SUPPORT ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Serve as a support scientist, for example, specify data product metadata.
- Compile, analyze and provide various metrics (ingest, archive, distribution and user) to ESDIS Project, NASA HQ, and instrument teams.
- Perform special and anomalous metrics analyses/studies
- Work as a substitute Interface Manager for EOS instrument science teams attend bi-weekly telecons as needed, prepare/distribute meeting minutes
- Develop interface requirements documents for processing of instrument data.
- Provide system engineering support for development of programs to support data analysis and reporting.
- Support development and host functions for conducting seminars using internet based tools, such as webinars.
- Support organizing end user workshops and participation in the various conferences in the communication capacity as required.
- Proficiency in remotely sensed Earth Science products from the various instruments onboard the NASA/NOAA satellites, Including EOS Terra, Aqua, Aura, NPP.
- Experience conducting meetings, interfacing with technical groups, such as Science Team Members, and developing technical materials, such as Interface Control Documents.
- Familiarity with the airborne data, e.g. ICEBridge, EV-1
- Experience in system software development, preferably EOSDIS components
- Experience in querying Oracle databases using SQL
- Experience in MS office S/W (Excel, Word, Power Point)
- Excellent communication (written & oral), and teamwork skills
- US Citizenship or Permanent Residency Required.
- At least Master's degree in physical sciences
- At least 5 years of experience in earth sciences including remote sensing of geophysical parameters
- At least 3 years of experience in system software development
- Solid knowledge of remotely sensed Earth data products and data processing particularly those from NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments
- Excellent communication (written & oral), and teamwork skills
