Job Family :Medical Data Analyst & Researcher (Digital)Travel Required :NoneClearance Required :Ability to Obtain Public TrustWhat You Will Do:We are currently searching for a Hematopathology Assistant to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM). This is a full-time opportunity based in Bethesda, MD.
Interpretation and/or collation and integration of draft elements (e.g. flow cytometry, cytogenetics, NGS targeted panel results, molecular testing, peripheral blood or bone marrow smear) of reports, including review of current and prior clinical and laboratory findings.
Appropriate assessment of the need for additional clinical laboratory testing or special studies.
Enters laboratory findings and preliminary drafts of interpretive laboratory reports into computer and run computer programs for the generation of drafts of interpretive laboratory reports, using the laboratory information system.
Formal instruction and guidance of hematopathology fellows and residents in the handling of tissue(s), interpretation and collation of data, as well as help with onboarding of new trainees to the service.
Communicates with outside hospitals and providers for second opinion cases to facilitate acquisition of materials or clinical history.
Demonstration of astute judgment when handling patient material and reports.
Troubleshooting of problems that arise dealing with mislabeling or other problems with specimens, working with technical and medical staff and other departmental personnel as necessary, as well as other clinical staff in the hospital.
Participates in QA/QI projects, including development, evaluation, and implementation of new tests and analysis and implementation of tests, in collaboration with technical and medical staff, and supports initiatives within the DLM Hematology and Hematopathology Laboratories.
Aids laboratory technicians and administrative assistants, as needed, on clinical and technical problems and interpretation of results.
Assists senior staff by assuring consistent and proper performance of laboratory testing for departmental or inter-departmental purposes such as clinical studies, teaching, and research.
Assists clinical staff in preparation of case materials for research, clinical trials, conferences, special studies, and clinical studies, including digital scanning/photomicroscopy.
Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team.
Communicates effectively with clinical technologists, residents, fellows, and attending physicians.
Active participation in resident teaching conferences and integrative diagnostic boards for the services.
Adheres to established department policies, procedures and objectives, including quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
Follows all Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals and related NIH Laboratory and Hospital Policies.
Performs other technical and ad hoc administrative tasks, including participation in quality assurance/quality improvement projects, such as development, evaluation, and implementation of new tests and analysis as appropriate.
Participates in training of assigned personnel, clinical fellows, visiting scientists, medical technology/CLS students.
Participates in continuing education and maintains responsibility for professional development and competency.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
What You Will Need:
Bachelor of Science degree
Minimum of FOUR (4) years of experience in a clinical setting is required.
Ability to summarize complex clinical and laboratory data.
Ability to function independently.
Extensive comprehension of medical terminology.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to lift 10 – 30 pounds.
Excellent hand-eye coordination.
What Would Be Nice To Have:
Preferred areas of study: Medical Technology, chemical, physical, or biological science.
Masters degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
Familiarity with basic computer programs for data entry and analysis, searching for clinical information, case identification and retrieval.
Strong communications skills, both oral and written to permit interactions with pathologists, residents, other physicians, technicians, secretaries, and other administrative staff.
HTL or equivalent certification is preferred.
Additional, special certifications preferred.
Certified Pathologist Assistants or US/foreign medical school graduates with post-graduate clinical training in Pathology or Hematology from a US or foreign residency training program would be considered.
Prior experience with and extensive knowledge of hematology laboratory testing, including peripheral blood, body fluid, and bone marrow morphology, hemoglobin electrophoresis testing, coagulation testing and clinical flow cytometry is strongly preferred.
Extensive knowledge of the basic sciences, especially hematopoietic morphology, histology, and pathophysiology is preferred.
The annual salary range for this position is $65,900.00-$98,900.00.
