The HECN team operates high-performance networking solutions for science at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The work location will be at NASA GSFC in Greenbelt, MD - both remote and in-person work at the facility is required.

The focus of this position is on Network support (both hardware and software with an emphasis on hardware), including cabling, racking, installing, and configuring a wide range of network equipment, including but not limited to routers, switches, firewalls, etc. Candidates will be expected to support the operational network through maintenance, troubleshooting, and, if possible, hardware repair. In addition, the candidate will participate in building customized solutions to meet emerging requirements. Some knowledge of electronics and/or electrical engineering would be useful.

This is an ideal position in which to learn about all aspects of networking (including security), work with state-of-the-art hardware and software, while supporting a wide range of science at NASA. The position will shadow a group of highly experienced network engineers to learn a broad set of networking skills. We are seeking candidates who are well organized, reliable, can take ownership of assigned tasks, and meet deadlines. Applicants must be willing to learn and adapt to quickly changing requirements, have great communication skills, interact with customers, and work both independently and as a part of a team. We have an exceptionally supportive environment that is great for learning new skills and provides an excellent career path with increasing responsibilities.

  • Installing, configuring, and maintaining server hardware and Linux operating system and associated application software
  • Building of custom server hardware using COTS components for a number of unique network applications and high performance network R&D, including installation of network interface cards and other hardware components
  • Work with GSFC cable plant engineers to implement, document, and maintain fiber and copper connections between the various network elements, including troubleshooting and correcting any problems that arise
  • Configuring and troubleshooting network devices (end-to-end, including fiber connections) to enhance reliability, performance and security, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other network infrastructure components
  • Maintain the computer room racks, network and computer hardware, and all associated cabling, and maintain and monitor the PDUs, UPSes, and Source Transfer Switches that provide the power for the computer room network and system hardware
  • Provide quality and timely network user support (end system to end system)
  • Deploying critical patches and upgrades to ensure that operating systems and software applications are compliant with Information Technology (IT) security requirements
  • Enforcing computer and network access controls consistent with NASA IT security policies
  • Performing and managing computer system backups
  • In-person facility support work as required

Required Experience:

  • Two or more years of hands-on network engineering experience or equivalent
