Job SummaryThe Data Engineer II will work under limited supervision and guidance to develop reports, pull data from a variety of databases and datasets, including both internal and external sources, and create a real-time data visualization platform. Will actively contribute to discussions with a diverse community of users to understand their needs on specific projects. Will participate in regular discussions with other data engineers and data scientists about code and process improvement.

This Data Engineer II will be responsible:
  • Working largely independently but with some guidance from team lead, will develop reports and visualizations to fulfill requests using a variety of database and analytic technologies. Will work closely with other members of the IT team where appropriate.
  • Will support and, under some supervision will be responsible for, the design, implementation and maintenance of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to gather information from a variety of databases and datasets, including both internal sources and external sources. Collaborates with clinical and administrative staff to ensure that reports are timely, accurate, meaningful, and interpretable.
  • Will build a data visualization platform to facilitate analysis and multidisciplinary discussion of data in real-time.
  • May assist with building databases based on project requirements and with maintaining their documentation.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots issues with reports. Escalates problems requiring more in-depth knowledge to team lead appropriately.
  • May assist researchers with the statistical analysis of the data.
  • Actively contributes to iterative discussions with a diverse community of users including clinicians, clinical researchers, and administrators, to assist with identifying their reporting needs. May also work directly with users.
  • Contributes to discussions with other data engineers on issues related to tools and languages, and participates in code reviews. May sometimes act as a resource to other data engineers.
  • Participates in group activities and contributes to discussions with the whole team.
  • Produces and keeps up-to-date written documentation on processes.

In order to qualify, you must have:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Computer Science or STEM discipline.
  • 2-4 years of experience on a job or internship preferred.
  • Proficiency with SQL and knowledgeable about database models.
  • Familiarity with building dynamic visualizations using tools, such as Microstrategy, or Tableau, is required.
  • Familiarity with a scripting language such as R, Python, or Scala is a plus.
  • Understands the design and implementation of data collection systems and ETL processes in a Production environment is a plus.
  • With light supervision, capable of taking projects of moderate complexity and scope, developing and evaluating options, and completing them in a reasonable time frame. Able to understand the needs of a project and to describe road blocks and project status to technical lead and/or managers.
  • Displays interest in and demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and grow as a data engineer.
  • Ability to understand the real-world context behind technical questions and requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills, with great attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain positive and productive relationships, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical peers and non-technical users.
  • Ability to ensure information is complete and accurate; follows up with others to ensure that commitments have been fulfilled.
  • A strong focus on customer service.
  • Proficiency in Statistical / Machine Learning is a plus.
  • Familiarity with distributed frameworks for Big Data is a plus.
