Job Description

This position will work closely with senior-level mechanical engineering staff and assist in the development of design documents including P&ID’s, plant / process utility distribution plans, utility consumption summaries, airflow diagrams, pressurization plans, ductwork/piping plans, temperature/humidity control calculations, and equipment/construction specifications. This position will be expected to execute work on one or more projects simultaneously as delegated by the Project Leads. Project work may include all levels of design such as feasibility studies, conceptual and schematic design, as well as construction documentation and construction administration. Project sizes will vary and will consist primarily of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or industrial process projects including both existing building improvements and new construction. Multiple development paths are available, including the areas of HVAC and critical utility piping.

Responsibilities/Job Duties:

· Assisting in the development of HVAC, plant and clean utility, plumbing, and compressed gas system philosophies.

· Developing project documents (e.g., calculations, reports and construction drawings and specifications) for clients, according to regulatory and industry standards.

· Coordinating with other disciplines and other internal and external team members (e.g., vendors, clients, and contractors).

· Researching mechanical / utility materials and methods as required.

· Assisting with design development and coordinating with the design team at the direction of the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

· Developing Mechanical / Utility equipment and construction specifications.

· Developing temperature / humidity control calculations, airflow diagrams, pressurization plans, and classification plans.

· Sizing and developing layouts for ductwork and piping plans.

· Assisting with development of the building management system (BMS) control philosophy, details, and plans with I&C engineers.

· Developing utility consumption summaries for clean and plant utilities.

· Developing P&ID’s, equipment plans, plant / process utility distribution plans, and system details.

· Performing construction assistance in the form of submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field visits to verify construction of I&C scope is proceeding per the intent of the design.

· Perform thermal load calculations independently, for review by Lead Engineer.

· Define system design strategies and execute designs independently, for review by Lead Engineer.

· Size and select mechanical equipment.

· Present design progress and represent the firm at client meetings.

· Perform other duties as directed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Architectural, or Chemical Engineering. 3 years of experience in a design firm setting, working with the following: performing three-dimensional duct and piping system layouts using Autodesk Revit building information modeling software; in the use of energy analysis software for building mechanical systems; working with airside building mechanical systems design, including duct sizing using equal friction and constant velocity methods, friction loss calculations, and layout; and working with hydronic building mechanical systems design, including pipe sizing for Newtonian fluids, hydraulic pressure loss calculations, and distribution system layout for heating hot water and chilled water systems. 2 years experience with the following is also required: developing airside, hydronic, and steam system piping and instrumentation diagrams using AutoCAD Plant 3D design software; using three-dimensional coordination and clash detection software for building systems design, Autodesk Navisworks; using Bluebeam document markup and collaboration software; executing building mechanical systems designs for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and advanced technology facilities. Demonstrated ability with Microsoft Office programs, including Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic programming. Demonstrated ability with Tri-Flex pipe stress analysis software to evaluate piping movement and internal stresses within complex utility distribution piping networks.
