Job Description:

The selected candidate will work closely with optical and mechanical engineers to determine the methodologies and techniques required to assemble, align and test precision optical systems. The candidate will ultimately be responsible for executing these techniques and procedures.

The candidate will support staff members in developing a variety of optical systems including telescopes, lens assemblies, laser optics, focal plane assemblies and fiber optics for space and airborne applications. This position involves assembling and aligning complex optical systems using a variety of optical instruments, performing optical testing, and specifying and purchasing optical components. The candidate will also help organize and maintain the Group's optical facilities and instrumentation. The position may require special security clearances and travel to meetings and field sites.

The candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in optical assembly and alignment. The candidate should have experience assembling, aligning and testing refractive and reflective optical components and systems. The candidate should have experience with optical alignment instruments such as interferometers, autocollimators, alignment telescopes, theodolites, profilometers and wavefront sensors. Experience with interferometric testing, precision lens assembly, high power lasers and fiber optics is strongly desired. The candidate should have a broad understanding of optical fabrication techniques and shall be capable of evaluating vendors for custom manufacturing requirements. The candidate should be capable of performing incoming inspection on a variety of procured items and therefore needs a working knowledge of optical fabrication specifications.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with space systems and laser communication / lasercom system testing. Three years' of testing experience would be desired.
