Research Computing supports basic, translational, and clinical research by providing researchers with access to digital tools and technologies. Our computing environment consists of high-performance computing clusters, virtual machines, PetaByte-scale high-performance storage, and cloud platforms. We work with BCH scientists to develop solutions in support of cutting-edge research ranging from lattice light-sheet microscopy to CryoEM, genomics, and informatics.

The Software Engineering team within Research Computing maintains 12 applications ranging from electronic data capture, remote patient consent, business intelligence, machine learning, laboratory information management systems, and APIs interfacing commercial platforms for genomic analysis which support an institutional genomic initiative. The team designs and develops new applications in line with the needs of the research community and invents tools to enable team members. Best practices of software engineering are applied and tools such as cron, Docker, Airflow, Jenkins are commonly used.

The Principal Engineer shall be responsible for :
  • Architecting and implementing workflows supporting an institutional genomics initiative that is diagnosing hundreds of rare disease patients per year. Working with leadership, researchers, junior engineers, and bioinformaticians to design, develop, maintain, and support the codebase that enables researchers to analyze patient data and identify new diagnoses.
  • Providing routine as well as leading-edge support to our research community by applying advanced informatics tools, methods, and technologies; prioritizing effectively for assigned scope of work; applying acquired expertise to analyze and solve technical problems without clear precedent; providing technical guidance to employees, colleagues and customers; delivering a high level of customer service as per agreed-upon metrics
  • With minimal supervision and direction, delivering technical solutions that meet user needs in the required timeframe. Evaluating new technologies, conducting analyses and incorporating feedback from forums and broadening use.
  • Routinely leading, co-leading, or participating in the most complex, vital, and innovative projects from the BCH research community; setting goals and objectives for projects and demonstrating achievement; coordinating with other stakeholders and contributing to the resulting presentations and/or publications
  • Developing training curriculum; training staff and researchers; effectively tailoring presentations; developing, implementing, and maintaining knowledge management systems
  • Creating or contributing to a range of compelling communications that deliver the most complex and novel content and motivate action; preparing communications appropriate for senior management and wide distributions; reviewing and providing feedback on documents prepared by staff.
  • Presenting at steering committees, scientific meetings, and working groups; running productive project, team.
To qualify you must have:
  • At least 4-year STEM Bachelor's degree or 4-years of STEM experience. A minimum of one year of position-specific experience might potentially include experience acquired through MSc or Ph.D. studies
  • Extensive software engineering and system design/development experience, experience on API and application development while utilizing one of the many web frameworks is desirable.
  • Deep export knowledge of programming languages used in support of biomedical research, such as Python or Java. extensive knowledge on databases (SQL and no-sql) and Linux systems.
  • The candidate must have process automation, integration and process management experience, experience with CI/CD, Jenkins/Airflow preferred.
  • Experience with clinical research data types (WES/WGS, patient-level data, structural biology data) would be a plus.
