First Parish in Malden is a Unitarian Universalist congregation seeking childcare providers and educators to work as a CUUSP Week Summer Program Counselor. Teach and mentor youth ages 5-14 during our week long program - August 18-22. (Note that we also have positions available on Sundays throughout the year.)
Job Description:
This position requires teaching and mentoring youth, ages 5-14 during a week-long summer program. The Chalice UU Summer Program will be focusing on Unitarian Universalist (UU) values and traditions, so some UU experience is helpful, but not required. Instructors will be responsible for teaching or assisting with various activities and games, both indoors and outdoors. Our safe congregation policy requires that two adults be present with the children, so all groups will be co-led, and we will maintain a ratio of 1:5. CUUSP Week will be a joint program of First Parish Malden and the Melrose UU Church, so counselors will be supervised by Malden’s Director of Religious Education and/or Melrose’s Director of Lifespan Faith Engagement.
Duties consist of:
Provide quality, nurturing care to young people in the program.
Co-lead workshops based on your skills and interests, and those of the children in the group.
Support youth in collaborating with each other and participating in all activities in a positive manner.
Communicate effectively with children, their parents, and other staff.
Demonstrate skills to properly address developmental needs of children.
Maintain a safe, clean, care-giving environment, practice good personal hygiene and hand washing to assure the well- being and safety of all.
About Us:
First Parish Malden is a vibrant congregation of folks who take risks for justice, embrace difference, and give back. We are home to people of all ages, races, gender identities and expressions, and many other spectrums. While we meet in a church building that looks like a Christian house of worship, we welcome people from all religious backgrounds and theologies, including atheists. We don’t all need to believe the same things in order to worship together. As Unitarian Universalists, we put love at the center of everything we do. Most importantly, we want to build and nurture a community that’s respectful, supportive, and fun! Our lessons are all centered around our shared values of Justice, Equity, Transformation, Pluralism, Interdependence, and Generosity.
About YOU:
Experience working with young children as well as respect for their individual voices and perspectives.
Respect for Unitarian Universalist (UU) values and traditions – some experience with UU congregations is helpful, but not required.
Ability to maintain a safe, clean, caregiving environment, and prioritize compassionate communication with children, parents, and other staff.
Completion of a Criminal Background application (CORI), vaccination against Covid-19, First Aid & CPR Certification (or willingness to complete the training after being hired).
Time Frame:
The Chalice UU Summer Program will be August 18-22, 2025, from 8:45 - 4 pm. Staff will need to be on site for 30 minutes before and after each day. There will be some planning ahead of time that will take place on your own time. There will be two evening zoom meetings in the weeks beforehand, and a training session on Sunday August 17th in the afternoon that all staff must attend.
We encourage people of all races, ethnicities, religious backgrounds, & gender identities/expressions to apply.
