Mechanic Job Description

A mining operation is seeking an experienced Diesel Mechanic responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of heavy equipment including haul trucks, loaders, drills, conveyors, and other mining machinery. This role ensures optimal equipment performance and contributes directly to the safe and efficient operation of the site. Ideal candidates will be hands-on problem solvers who thrive in industrial environments.

Job Summary

The Diesel Mechanic will support underground and surface operations by diagnosing mechanical issues, performing repairs, conducting preventive maintenance, and ensuring all equipment operates efficiently and safely. This is a full-time, industrial maintenance role in a physically demanding, team-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on heavy mobile and fixed equipment including wheel loaders, conveyors, bulldozers, haul trucks, personnel carriers, and pumps.

Inspect equipment to determine wear, damage, or needed maintenance; dismantle and reassemble parts using hoists, hand tools, and testing equipment.

Perform welding repairs to structural and mechanical components.

Conduct routine preventative maintenance, including fluid checks, lubrication, and inspections.

Maintain clean and safe work areas in accordance with housekeeping and safety protocols.

Accurately complete maintenance logs and work orders at the end of each shift.

Follow all safety policies, procedures, and MSHA/OSHA regulations.

Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding equipment status and safety concerns.

Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and electrical systems.

Use technical drawings, schematics, and diagnostic tools.

Assist in sourcing and installing replacement parts.

Train new team members and share knowledge across departments.

Perform other duties as assigned, including incidental tasks to support overall operations.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Accredited diesel mechanic certification preferred.

5+ years of experience working as a heavy equipment mechanic in an industrial or mining environment required.

Experience using CAT SIS or similar programs preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to repair and maintain equipment to OEM standards.

Skilled in diagnosing malfunctions, isolating causes, and performing timely repairs.

Familiarity with cranes, haul trucks, loaders, bulldozers, conveyors, pumps, compressors, pneumatic tools, and related systems.

Ability to operate and test machinery before and after maintenance.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work safely in varying temperatures and environmental conditions, including underground.

Capable of lifting and carrying 50+ pounds regularly.

Must comply with PPE requirements, including wearing safety gear at all times.
