Questions about the position can be sent to [email protected] .Job SummaryThe Residential College Arts and Ideas in the Humanities major program, https://lsa.umich.edu/rc/current-students/curriculum/arts-and-ideas-in-the-humanities.html , is seeking to hire a Lecturer I for Winter 2025 to teach a course on Digital Humanities. We expect this person to have a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, Digital Humanities or related discipline. This will be an up to 33.33% position for teaching one course in the winter semester.Mission StatementThe mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.Course DescriptionThe primary focus for this position is to teach a course in Digital Humanities in the Residential College Arts and Ideas in the Humanities Program. This course will offer an accessible and gentle introduction to Digital Humanities, emphasizing the intersection between traditional humanities scholarship and digital theories, methods, and tools. Students in the course will be expected to analyze the strengths and the shortcomings of Digital Humanities with particular attention to what is included and excluded in large multilingual text-based datasets and how to interpret and analyze massive amounts of information fairly and equitably. The course offers weekly readings of foundational texts and hands-on experiments providing practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the field. Students will be expected to complete a final project, either a research paper or a multimodal experiment. The instructors main course goal is to equip students with adaptable meta-skills, preparing the students for the ever-evolving Digital Humanities landscape and beyond.The successful candidate will find a vibrant scholarly community within the university. The RC, in seeking to broaden its curricular offerings, remains committed to active participation in that campus community.Required QualificationsMinimum: PhD. with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.Desired QualificationsKnowledge in the foundational concepts and methodologies of Digital Humanities is required.Modes of WorkPositions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
