The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.This position, located in the Risk Evaluation & Air Modeling unit, leads and coordinates the technical development, updates, and use of the Minnesota Statewide Screening of Health Risks from Air Pollution (MNRISKS) system—a modeling tool that calculates the risks posed by hazardous air pollutants across Minnesota. The incumbent will manage the continued development and implementation of system updates, guide work groups in analyzing, visualizing, and communicating high-quality data, and coordinate air emissions risk analysis for facility assessments. Additionally, this position provides expert scientific and technical advice on risk assessment, evaluation, and communication.Minimum QualificationsA Master of Science degree in environmental health, risk assessment, toxicology, natural sciences, or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience in analyzing environmental data, the fate and transport of environmental contaminants, applying risk assessment principles, the fundamentals of cumulative impacts, and developing conclusions and recommendations. A Doctorate degree in one of those areas of experience listed above will count toward one year of experience.Candidates must have strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others across environmental programs and research activities.The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will not sponsor applicants for work visas. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.Preferred QualificationsFamiliarity with the MNRISKS system.Understanding of the development and usage of scripting languages (such as Python or R) in a server and/or cloud computing environment.Experience with relational databases management systems such as PostgreSQL or Oracle.Familiarity with development and implementation of air emissions inventories.Familiarity with air quality sensors including quality control and analysis of air quality sensor data.In-depth understanding of environmental and human toxicology.An understanding of impacts to human health resulting from cumulative exposure to airborne toxics.A thorough understanding of the Clean Air Act and associated federal regulations, particularly those related to air quality standards.Experience with developing air quality standards to protect human health.Knowledge of scientific, experimental and research techniques sufficient to understand, design and conduct comprehensive and sophisticated scientific research.Physical RequirementsRequires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such as articles as file folders, ledgers, and small equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.Additional RequirementsPosition duties may require travel but driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of this position.
