In this hands-on role, you will apply extensive, applied and broad technical expertise of adhesion science including fundamentals of adhesion, joint design, adhesive selection, chemistry, adhesion promotion, testing methodologies, characterization, processing technologies, handling, etc. You will be the subject matter expert for adhesion science collaborating with material scientists in a centralized technology team, leading and supporting key enterprise-wide material technology initiatives and problem-solving efforts, working with development, manufacturing personnel and outside vendors.A Day in the Life:Lead and support teams interacting with material scientists, engineers, vendors to apply and develop technology in the area of adhesion science, chemistry, testing methodologies, characterization and processing methodsStrong background and recognized for deep expertize in adhesion science, adhesive selection, chemistry, testing and processing is requiredDevelop/perform adhesion sample preparation, testing methods, data analysis, interpretation, documentation and reporting of results to inform critical business decisionsPartner with Medtronic operating units to reduce technical risks associated with adhesives and their application in new and existing productsAct as the primary lead and technical contact for projects across Medtronic and within the Core Technologies groupEducate colleagues across Medtronic and vendors in adhesion scienceMay provide direction and guidance for lower-level personnelCreative person with proven problem-solving skillsEngage in hands-on laboratory workMust Have: Minimum RequirementsBachelors degree required

Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have:Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related technical disciplineMinimum of 5 years work experience in an applied or research and development setting with an advanced degree, or 7 years work experience with a Bachelors degreeWill consider applicants with more experience and level commensurate with experienceUnderstanding of and experience with a wide variety of adhesives, testing methodologies, chemistry, adhesive selection, characterization, processing and handlingProven independent experience in technical problem solving and critical thinking skillsMasters, or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or related technical discipline preferred.Hands-on adhesive experience in a laboratory environment including experience with:Adhesive selection, knowledge of various adhesive types e.g. epoxy, moisture cure RTV silicones, urethanes, cyanoacrylates, acrylated-urethanes, etc.Adhesion test methods including evaluation via peel, lap shear, butt adhesion tests, determining adhesive failure modes, key test factors that influence resultsAdhesive properties including determining cure (DSC, FTIR), pot life (viscosity), mechanical/thermal properties (DSC, DMA, tensile), hydration, wetting (contact angle), chemical compatibilityAdhesive processing and promotion methods including UV/light cure, cleaning, plasma processes for adhesion promotion, primers, mixing components, etc.Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skillsProven continuous learning potentialExcellent organizational and multi-tasking skills that are results orientedAdaptable to changing priorities and to working under general supervision in a matrixed organizationAbility to build relationships and work effectively with others on cross-functional teamsAbility to work independently and be effective with minimal supervisionAbility to work from the scientific fundamentals to complex engineered systemsAbout MedtronicTogether, we can change healthcare worldwide.
