The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:Function: Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment Provide traffic control Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities Performs other duties as assigned.Function: Snow and IcePerforms Snow & Ice duties such as: Maintains roadways for snow and ice control Prepares and inspects winter equipment Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing; an individual not currently in the random pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDMA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-AM). The incumbent must also be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.In case of roadway emergencies or weather events the incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.Minimum QualificationsValid Class B Driver’s License and no air brake restriction. Must obtain a Tanker Endorsement prior to hire. Must obtain a Class A License within 6 months of hire.Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with: Experience: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).OR Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.Exam Part 2: Candidates that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher.Preferred Qualifications Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation GeneralistPhysical RequirementsA pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam.
