ResponsibilitiesJob DescriptionWe are currently seeking a detail-oriented, experienced communicator to lead the production of communications materials for sponsors and stakeholders in our Energy and Environment Directorate (EED). This is an ideal role for an adaptable, multi-talented communicator who has experience creating energy efficiency-related content in multiple formats.If you have superb communications and organizational skills, are deadline driven, and have a talent for developing creative and compelling content in this topic area, we want to connect with you! Specifically, we’re looking for candidates who have experience concepting, writing, and editing content to appropriately capture a building energy efficiency story for targeted audiences. Ideal candidates will also be excellent at teaming and working collaboratively with other communicators and researchers.AccountabilitiesContribute to a wide spectrum of energy related communications projects. Duties can include:
Developing content and materials for specific audiences to support EED’s business development goals, including for consumers of energy efficiency technologies and other stakeholders.
Collaborating with colleagues to interpret overarching business or communications strategy and channeling it into effective communications activities.
Managing projects of limited scope, including communications campaigns, event communications, video scripting and production, and website development.
Writing, gathering, and vetting original content and editing existing content representing EED’s capabilities, people, projects, and impact for internal and external audiences.
Producing content in multiple formats (e.g., science articles and staff accomplishments, internal and external newsletters, website articles, social media content, reports, flyers, and presentations).
Contributing content and strategic ideas for elevating the reach and impact of websites, including (but not limited to) the Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center (BASC) site and PNNL’s website and Intranet.
Collaborating with leading scientists, engineers, and managers at DOE and its national laboratories; consultants and academics; utility and market transformation organizations; manufacturers and trade organizations.
Partner with EED leaders on communication objectives and tactics that elevate awareness of expertise and capabilities with key audiences.
Collaborate with specialized teams in the Communications Division—newsroom, creative services, editing—and related services; lean on the skills and expert support of others to complete projects.
Understand and adhere to the style guides and preferences of major sponsors; exceed sponsor expectations for sponsor-funded, sponsor-branded communications deliverables.
Uphold processes and requirements for external release of information.
Actively use the Communications Division workflow system, “CommWorks,” to record assignments, monitor progress, and route work.
Perform other duties as required/assigned, including the support of communications needs in other EED topic areas and divisions as needed.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant experience -OR-
MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience planning, executing, and measuring the effectiveness of communication products that can make highly technical/complex processes and technologies understandable for energy stakeholders.
Exceptional written, oral, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills.
Talent for interviewing others and probing for impactful content that will resonate with targeted audiences.
Knack for understanding audience characteristics and adjusting writing styles for various groups.
A familiarity with building science and technology concepts, products, and techniques that are focused on energy efficiency; demonstrated experience communicating in this field.
A passion for communicating, interacting, and collaborating with a range of stakeholders including manufacturers, supply chain businesses, trade groups, utilities, buyers’ groups, energy efficiency orgs/policymakers, and consumers.
Exceptional attention to detail, transparent follow up, and deadlines; able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Self-motivated and resourceful; able to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative, matrixed environment.
Experience with or knowledge of content management systems, especially Drupal and SharePoint.
Creative thinker with a strategic approach to problems.
