Amentum's portfolio includes capabilities in critical facility infrastructure, aviation, logistics, training, meteorological data collection platforms, range operations and national security solutions, to support complex missions for customers around the world.Amentum, in support of the NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) at Stennis Space Center (SSC), is currently seeking a Database Administrator.NDBC provides quality observations in the marine environment to support the understanding of and predictions to changes in weather, climate, oceans, and coasts. NDBC designs, engineers, fabricates/integrates, tests, deploys, maintains/repairs 4 worldwide buoy systems: 106 Weather Buoy Stations, 43 Coastal Observation (C-MAN) stations, 55 Tropical Atmosphere-Ocean Array (TAO) systems, and 39 Deep-Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) stations. Program scope also includes data collection/analysis/storage/dissemination (via satellite/website/other means) of related weather and environmental data from these systems (25%) and other sources (75%) of in-situ weather data.The position is for the Database Administrator responsible for the servers that process data from a global network of buoys, managed by the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC).Duties/Responsibilities:
Develops high performance relational databases to store scientific, inventory, and transactional data.
Collaborates with development and administration teams on the design, implementation, and management of database services, data stores, stored procedures, and replication; provides recommendations and design considerations for database table and query design.
Manages the design and implementation of security and data access methods to ensure services are properly controlled, monitored and audited.
Develops and implements maintenance and administration procedures for database systems including the usage of metrics to ensure optimal performance.
Proactively monitors database system status to determine early warning signs of issues and optimize performance.
Investigates performance anomalies and performs root cause analysis for database and interface issues. Improves database performance to optimal levels.
Establishes summarized and scalable data schemas to deliver high performance historical reporting and near-real-time data feeds.
Authors, documents, and maintains scripts to perform various aspects of data management and system administration.
Creates, documents, and maintains data schema and data dictionaries.
Ensures that backups are performed regularly on all databases.
Evaluates new technologies, frameworks, and methodologies to scale our data infrastructure for future customer growth and new products.
Requirements:
Must have strong knowledge of data relationships, normalization, and performance tuning.
Demonstrated knowledge in data warehousing, scalability, server clustering, and replication.
Experience administering databases in a Linux environment is required.
Experience working with application development and system administration teams.
Proven ability to contribute to the database requirements and implementation in a software development life cycle.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Must possess the ability to multitask and administer many systems simultaneously.
Strong experience in MySQL, Oracle, and MariaDB databases is highly preferred.
Server virtualization and SAN storage strategies experience is preferred.
Must be flexible and willing to support a 24 x 7 environment.
Must be able to successfully complete a NOAA (Stennis Space Center)/NASA background investigation for site/system access.
Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship or a valid Green Card is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
Experience & Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
Minimum 4 years of experience in database design, data modeling, data security, and performance tuning.
