Appointment Type Full Time Regular Exempt/Non-Exempt Non-Exempt General Function The Research Specialist carries out specific research objectives or other projects defined by the Principal Investigator. The duties of the Research Specialist will vary in level of responsibility and complexity depending on the grant project.Description of Primary Duties The research specialist will focus on the collection of high- quality field data contributing to the basic natural or cultural resource inventories of a park or a monitoring program and to assess status and trends of resource conditions. They will identify species, measure abundance or condition, environmental parameters, etc., using technical instruments, manuals, protocols, and knowledge of the resources.The Research Specialist will be responsible for learning the flora of network national parks. The successful candidate will work to update botanical training materials and field resources, assist with vegetation field sampling, and collect and curate plant specimens as needed. Team members travel to national parks as needed for field work. Field work includes hiking distances carrying a pack over uneven ground and in a variety of weather conditions. Additional project duties may also include deer monitoring and fire effects sampling. Data entry using a variety of databases is another important function of the position. Successful candidates may also be asked to summarize data and contribute to report writing. There may be opportunities to investigate an area of interest that enhances the current monitoring efforts. Other work, e.g., equipment maintenance, and other duties, will be assigned as needed.A good understanding of the scientific process; knowledge of botany in grasslands or oak-hickory woodlands and/or fire ecology. Basic understanding of statistics will be helpful. Position may have opportunities to supervise students or other seasonal staff. The research specialist may spend 50-60 days in the field per year.Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; a Bachelor’s degree in a discipline of the hiring college or research center is preferred.Skills: Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Must have the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff, as well as to communicate effectively with off-campus collaborators. Proficiency with basic spreadsheet, graphics, and word processing software is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required. Ability to travel, carry up to 40 pounds in a backpack, walk in uneven terrain over long distances, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
