Operating within each of the 3 target schools on a weekly basis, the Academic Coordinator maintains close contact with the target schools’ administration, liaisons, counselors, and students and oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Upward Bound curriculum including weekly meetings, Saturday Sessions, and individual student advising. This position also communicates with parents and families of participants frequently. The Academic Coordinator oversees the operation of the summer program and supervises summer program support staff and student employees.Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Education: A bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.Experience: At least two years of experience in program planning, social work, and/or program management is required. At least one year of direct work experience with low income, first generation high school students is required. At least one year of teaching or counseling experience at the secondary or post-secondary level is preferred.Skills: Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required. A demonstrated ability to work well with students, teachers, community partners, and other educational personnel is required. A commitment to the target population and the principles of equal opportunity is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.Other: A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required. The Academic Coordinator’s site location for work varies daily from the 3 target schools and MSU Main Campus. This is a set schedule on a weekly basis. This position requires working evenings and weekends occasionally. . Occasional out-of-town travel, including overnight stays, is required.
