What you'll do

H&R Block has long been a leader in tax preparation and financial services. Now we are transforming the use of data and data science within the company.

We are looking to add an experienced, innovative, and technically skilled software engineer with a product development focus to our enterprise Data & Analytics function. In this role, you will invent, design, and build advanced applications to bridge the divide between data professionals and their end users. You also will own and drive the function's design vision. You thrive at the intersection of front-end development, technology, and design; are interested in data; and will influence how we instrument and build solutions to share our data science work. You will spend most of your time designing and developing, but you also will lead a small team to scale your impact. This is a key position for evolving our function, and you will sit on the leadership team for Data & Analytics.

Day to day, you'll
  • Design, build, and maintain advanced production-ready solutions and demo-ready prototypes that delight a wide range of users
  • Utilize UX and design methods, principles of UI design, and front-end technologies to progress projects through all stages of development
  • Develop a comprehensive design and UX vision for internal data tools and products
  • Lead and develop a small team of direct reports and serve as a leader within the larger department
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively across the data-and-analytics teams and with our partners in IT, lines of business, and the executive team

What you'll bring to the team

  • A strong point of view and fresh ideas for innovation in this space, with a willingness to drive change
  • Expertise in full-stack UI development with HTML, CSS, and React (or similar JavaScript libraries), GraphQL, and Azure
  • Even better if you have experience with Apollo and MongoDB
  • A love for learning, expanding your stack of tools, and keeping yourself and the team on the cutting edge
  • The ability to plan, execute, and troubleshoot work for yourself and your team
  • A portfolio demonstrating impactful work with a deep understanding of human-centered design principles
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to drive large, complex projects with transparency
  • Communication skills with the ability to distill complex, technical subjects to a wider audience
  • Willingness to be bold, take risks, make decisions, and solve problems
