Help taking care of Horses

We are looking to hire someone for a long-term, but very part-time job, no specific experience is required, except common sense (that is important!). Scheduling is very versatile and we are offering $15 an hour to start, going up to $17 (or even more) after awhile.

And you will be an independent contractor so we won’t ever take taxes out. :)

We need someone to feed our horses, clear their area of old hay and poop, spray and brush them as needed, give one horse a pill (in a treat) daily, rearrange stacks of hay bales occasionally, and occasionally put winter blankets on the horses… along with other miscellaneous tasks as they come up, such as pulling weeds in the horse pasture, painting the horse shed, scooping snow, helping us fix the fence around the horse area, etc. So this is basically a general job that involves all the things necessary to care for our horses.

This will only take an hour or so on most days, so it’s just a supplemental job, not one you can actually support yourself on entirely. During the winter, the job might take a little longer each day, but during the summer it goes a bit faster since the horses have a pasture they can eat from and don’t need to be fed as much hay each day. But it will only average about an hour each day (but probably more as the weather gets cold).

As mentioned above, we are offering $15 per hour to start and will go up to $17 per hour (or more) after you’ve been here awhile, and after we see that you are a reliable worker, you follow instructions well, AND that you do your job efficiently. And as we also mentioned above, you will be considered an independent contractor so we don’t take taxes out.

The schedule is very versatile. We are looking for someone to work 3 to 4 days a week – and you can pick the days that you want to come each week. You can also pick the times you want to come each day, as long as it is in the afternoons or early evenings (although it must be before dark, at least until you become VERY familiar with the horses). And the days and specific times don’t have to be the same every week, so we can work around whatever else you have going on.

A big requirement is that you are RELIABLE. If you are not absolutely 100% reliable – that is, when you commit to do something you ALWAYS follow through – then please trust us, you will be wasting your time answering this ad. We are great people to work for, but if you are not absolutely reliable, we can assure you that you won't be a good fit for this job, so please save both yourself and us the time and skip this ad.

This is an outside job with mud, poop, rain, snow, dirt, sometimes in very hot or very cold weather, so if you are not into that then this job is not for you either. There is physical labor involved in this job, so you need to be relatively strong and in good shape. You should be able to comfortably lift at least a 50 pound bag a few times in a row, not just occasionally or one time per day.

Please note that this is actually work, not just a chance to hang around horses and enjoy yourself. You get to hang around horses and that is the nice part of the job… but it mainly involves scooping sometimes wet and heavy hay and poop, sometimes in bad weather, and other physical labor that goes along with the job, so it’s not all just about brushing the horses, etc. You will be brushing the horses and giving attention to them, but it’s primarily actual hard work, so be prepared for that.

The previous paragraph is worth emphasizing again. We have had many people respond to this ad thinking that it would mainly be a chance to hang around horses and have fun. And then they hope to bring their kids along too so they can enjoy the horses as well. And although getting to hang around horses and brush them, etc. is a perk of the job, it is still primarily hard work. That’s why we pay so well (and remember we don’t take taxes out) . So you will be earning your money!

Also, we are looking for someone who wants a long term job, not just something for the summer or over school break, or until you get another job. That means you will be working in the winter too, outside when it’s cold. If you have a problem working outside in the cold or rain, then this job is not for you.

We are in the Palmyra area. Please tell us where you live in your reply. We don’t need an actual address, just roughly where you live so that we know how far away you are from us. This is only for about an hour or so on most days so if you live too far away from us it won’t be worth your time to drive here.

Please also tell us something about yourself in your response. It's hard to determine who to respond to if you just give a short response like "I am interested in the job." Sorry, but if you do not tell us something about yourself (including roughly where you live) – like why you want this job or why you think we should hire you, we will not respond back. So please, respond with helpful info about yourself and we can go from there.

We look forward to hearing from you! Thank you.
