The Nine Publishing Technology team build and maintain some of the most highly respected and visited websites and mobile apps in Australia, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian Financial Review and 9Now, as well as their content management systems, services and middleware.

We operate a paved path product delivery platform with the specific intent of empowering our developers and allowing them to get our products in front of Australia as rapidly as possible.

At the beating heart of this product delivery platform you will find both Kubernetes and the Platform Engineering team, who build and operate a multi-tenant PaaS as well as the surrounding self-service Cloud Integration tooling which makes it such a success.

As an Engineering Manager within Platform Engineering you will play a key role in the Engineering and People Management tasks required to maintain and improve Site Reliability and provide a Platform & DevOps capability at scale to a variety of both Audience and Internal facing Product Development Teams.

What you’ll be doing:

Enabling your team

  • Assist the team in a hands-on capacity as required
  • Work with stakeholders to provide technical solutions to problems or issues
  • Act as a enabler, removing roadblocks to progress as needed
  • Work with team members to guide solutions towards business and technology goals
  • Drive the continuous improvement of processes and ways of work to improve team capacity and capability

Technical Leadership

  • Drive adoption of best practice and best in class technology
  • Remove single points of failure by cross-skilling staff and making sensible, strategic resourcing decisions
  • Always be on the lookout for products, solutions and enhancements which address current or perceived future business problems

Drive high performance

  • Provide one on one feedback, career advice and coaching for your team members
  • Communicate openly and be the voice of the business within your team, keeping them informed of and working towards the business vision & goals
  • Participate in hiring and other HR processes affecting your team where needed
  • Mentor team members to create a highly motivated, coherent, and cohesive culture which rewards high performance

Qualifications

What you’ll know:

Must Have:

  • 1+ year in a team or technical leadership role managing people
  • 4+ years experience in infrastructure or full stack development in cloud using DevOps practices
  • Strong technical knowledge and hands-on development capability in multiple relevant capabilities. (eg. Containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Terraform, Cloudformation, Puppet, Golang, NodeJS, Python or others as required by the squad)
  • Experience running a team responsible for 24x7, high availability, high volume digital products
  • Sound experience in change & incident management practices
  • Proven skills creating a high performance team environment
  • Managing yourself and your team in a fast changing environment with competing priorities
  • A strong understanding of agile development best practices including Scrum and Lean methodologies
  • Excellent communication skills
