Vision: To continue our promise to provide high-quality music programming in our schools, Uncommon Schools is excited to launch a high school instrumental program at Uncommon Preparatory High School (UPC). The goal of this program is to provide an extension of the middle school band program to the high school level. The high school program brings music education to a large number of high school students AND offers a new college access pathway for our students. Uncommon Schools seeks an accomplished, passionate High School Band Teacher to join our faculty. The position represents an exciting opportunity to join a launch program that creates additional college access pathways throughout the K-12 music education of our scholars.  Overview: The high school band teacher reports to and is managed by the Music Programs Manager.The high school music teacher role will consist of two key responsibilities; launching and developing the high school band program and coaching middle school band teachers.  Specific Role Requirements: High School Instructional Responsibilities: Develop student recruitment and school/family communication systems for band program Hold an open practice time for students during lunch block, providing feedback and coaching to individual students Supervise private and small group lessons during High School 2.0 period Direct after school band rehearsals- programming diverse and ambitious repertoire, run rehearsals that are engaging and rigorous, and prepare ensemble for performance opportunitiesCollaborate with the Music Programs Manager to secure all program needs prior to launch, including purchasing instruments, curriculum, furniture, etc. Partner with the High School Director of Operations and HS 2.0 Project Manager to ensure day-to-day program needs are being met as it relates to music instructionImplement curricula and activities to meet music-specific academic standards;Develop music literacy lesson components related to teaching rhythm and pitch notation, solfege reading and singing, improvisation and compositionParticipate in collaborative curriculum development, department activities, and school-wide functions;Develops strong classroom management skills congruent with Uncommon Schools system of management;Be accountable for students’ mastery of musical standards; Middle School Support & Development: Provide operational and instructional support for the high school feeder middle school band programs. This could include supporting rehearsal management, instrument procurement and maintenance, development curriculum and performance material.
