The ETS AI Research Labs is seeking a strategic leader with experience leading UX/UI teams, driving innovation, and devising frameworks and processes to act as Director, User Experience & Design in the AI Research Labs at ETS. The AI Research Labs are comprised of a team of user experience researchers and designers, learning scientists, instructional designers, impact research scientists, engineers, data scientists and product owners. The AI Research Labs develop solutions that are user-centered and built on a foundation of learning and cognitive science principles and leverage interactive task design, machine learning, and data sciences to create effective and efficient learning solutions.

Position Summary: The Director, User Experience & Design will lead a team of User Experience Researchers and Designers who support the development of prototypes and product concepts from early discovery through prototype MVP. This role will collaborate with other team directors on developing and implementing a user-centered design vision for the Labs. The successful Director, User Experience & Design candidate will (a) lead a team of UX/UI specialists that implements best practices in user-centered design including user research, user experience design, and user interface design (b) develop strategic frameworks that can be implemented by the UX/UI team (c) work collaboratively with scientists, developers, and product owners to deliver solutions that meet users' needs.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and implementation of UX/UI frameworks and processes across the AI Research Labs
  • Oversee the development of user protocols, user interviews, feedback analysis and insights sharing.
  • Ensure that UX/UI team is implementing most appropriate methods to accomplish team goals.
  • Oversee the UX/UI team's work with learning scientists, impact research scientists, engineers, software developers, and product owners in agile teams to support the efficient and effective development of product concepts and prototypes.
  • Lead the staffing, mentoring and management of UX/UI team.
  • Lead the development/curation of training materials/opportunities to support the professional development of the UX//UI staff.
  • Provide updates, as needed, to senior leadership on progress of UX/UI team development.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technology developments, potential pedagogical applications, and associated educational research.
  • Communicate findings from research and development efforts with broad audiences.

Experience and Skills

Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses:
  • A Masters or PhD in learning engineering, design, instructional design, human computer interaction or related work experience

Relevant Years of Experience:
  • At least 10 years of experience applying UX/UI best practices in user-centered product development
  • At least 6 years leading a team that conducted user experience research and applying findings from such research to the development of products and/or programs.
  • At least 6 years leading a team that followed iterative design processes, prototyping techniques, storyboarding, visual design, UI design, and interaction design.

  • Experience working with AI, ed-tech, teaching and learning, and/or language learning
