The work we do at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) matters to our country and the world.This role works in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and support glove box operations. The majority of daily work is "hands-on" glove box work in support of plutonium processing. Processes at Los Alamos National Lab are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety, and environmental compliance requirements.AMPP-6, in the Actinide Materials Processing & Power Division provides world-class plutonium science, processing, surveillance, characterization and production to support the national missions of defense and space exploration. We operate using the highest standards of accountability to ensure a safe environment for ourselves, our colleagues, and the public. AMPP-6 is seeking highly motivated Research Technologists to work in the plutonium facility at TA-55.Research Technologist 1 ($83,900 - $136,600)Duties include, but are not limited to :

Working as technical support for our process engineers to assist in the establishment of procedures, equipment procurement.

Assist the process engineers in writing and editing technical reports.

Assist in the calibration, and maintenance activities of various processing equipment.

Assist and provide technical guidance from our process engineers to our technicians on the floor.

Learn and assist in all metallographic and characterization processes.

Research Technologist 2 ($92,300 - $151,000)You will perform the following duties and responsibilities in addition to what was outlined at the lower level:

Edit and author procedures with minimal guidance from the process engineers.

Procure equipment needed to maintain current processes.

Write and edit technical reports.

Learn to independently calibrate and maintain various processing equipment.

Be the technical guidance to our technicians on the floor for your assigned processes.

Learn with intent to master all assigned metallographic and characterization processes.

What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:

Experience with technical report writing.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in any of the following: operation, calibration, and maintenance of processing equipment; performing work in fume hoods and/or regular/inert atmosphere glovebox.

Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles, mathematical formulas, computations, and data gathering methods.

Demonstrated experience maintaining and operating instruments to collect data.

Demonstrated technical leadership in area of expertise.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as an individual or part of a team in a multi-discipline and formal environment; specifically working with First Line Managers, Process Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Technicians.

Experience ensuring work, materials, processes, and products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technologist 2:

Strong technical report writing skills.

Demonstrated experience analyzing data, and summarizing results.

Experience developing new methods, techniques, or approaches to address critical technical or manufacturing problems.

Extensive experience with the Microsoft Office suite.

Demonstrated experience providing day-to-day technical support and supervision while maintaining progress on long-term tasks.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external customers.

Education / Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree (Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline) from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge or Experience in metallography techniques.

Experience and working knowledge in SNM material handling/movement.

Experience working with radioactive materials.

Demonstrated knowledge and application of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration criteria and standards.

Experience performing work in manufacturing environment.

Experience with method validation and analysis of measurement uncertainty.

Experience with any of the following: Actinide Chemistry; Materials Characterization; performing work in regular/inert atmosphere gloveboxes; Familiarity with Particle Size Analysis, wet sieving, pressure systems, furnace temperature controllers, optical microscopy, and electron microscopy.

Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the area of research.

Active DOE Q Clearance and HRP Certified.

Work Environment: Domestic travel, Work near sources of ionizing radiation, Work near machinery and moving parts, Domestic travel, Mask or respirator, Safety glasses or eye protection, Safety shoes or protective foot gear.Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
