Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our growing Trust & Safety team. In this role you will work with engineers, product managers, and designers to help champion our mission to “Keep Commerce Human and Safe”. Our team provides the platform that powers our Trust & Safety teams. We enable agents to keep the marketplace trustworthy and safe at scale as the number of listings and sellers continues to grow with Etsy’s success.

About the Role

  • The Trust & Safety engineering team works on improving the buying experience and building trust by keeping the marketplace free of sellers and items that do not comply with our policies and values.

  • Work on automating the remediation of shop issues, so that sellers have the tools and right level of information required to bring their shops into compliance without lengthy and labor intensive exchanges with Trust & Safety agents.

  • Help to build a technology portfolio that will allow the team to scale with Etsy as the number of buyers, sellers, and transactions continues to increase in the coming years.

  • Develop tools to prevent fraud and reduce the impact of fraudulent activity on Etsy and our buyers and sellers.

  • Maintain and enhance Etsy’s brand and compliance posture by neutralizing financial, regulatory and reputational risks.

  • Provide detailed and constructive design and code reviews.

  • Work cross-functionally with various engineering teams.

  • This is a full-stack position that heavily uses PHP, MySQL, JavaScript (including React), and TypeScript. Previous experience in this stack is not required, but you will need to have attention to detail and be comfortable debugging distributed systems.

r. This person will be located (eventually) inBrooklyn, NY OR we are considering remote candidates based in the U.S.for this position. Etsy offers three different work modes to meet the variety of needs and preferences of our team: Flex mode for candidates who are comfortable traveling to an office location 2+ times per week, Remote mode, and Office-based mode. Qualifications

You will do well in this role if you:

  • Have five or more years of practical software development experience.

  • Can efficiently use data to drive decision-making and solve problems.

  • Are comfortable working within a large codebase and strive to create simplicity from complex systems.

  • Write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability and scalability. You generally leave things in nicer shape than you found them.

  • Are a strong communicator and are willing to take on a mentoring role with teammates and peers.

  • Are comfortable working on a cross-functional product team with Product Managers, Designers, Researchers, and Data Analysts to maximize the impact of our work.

  • Are invested in Etsy’s vision, mission and values.

Experience with the technologies we currently use is beneficial, but not required.

Our engineers are concentrated in our Brooklyn HQ, but are located all over the US.
