GENERAL PURPOSE:With guidance and direction from the Quality Institute Leadership Team, provides leadership and operational oversight for the quality and safety in all UR Medicine Lines of Business supported by their service teams. They must possess excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with others and adapt to changing circumstances. Overall, an Assistant Director is a crucial member of the Sr. Management team who plays a key role in ensuring that the organization runs smoothly and effectively.Responsibilities include process reviews and making recommendations for operational improvement and assisting in setting strategic direction for UR Medicine wide quality information and analytics strategy, systems and services, including development of long-range operational goals and objectives. Track and address user needs, direct and supervise data scientists’ staff, recommend and deliver technologies that best help the UR Medicine and the Quality Institute achieve their strategic goals while balancing available technical and financial resources. Additional responsibilities may include day-to-day management of operating budget categories, coordination of special project activities, and management of, or participation in, contract negotiations for 3rd party software, services and solutions.RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develops, models, monitors and enforces University and Organization standards and values. Directs, recruits and evaluates departmental team members, providing day to day oversight of the respective reporting and data analytics. Allocates personnel, manages and/or assigns temporary team resources at a level that ensures all analytical requests and assignments are met. Motivates team members to achieve organizational excellence. Plans and implements staff training programs.
Develops machine learning (ML) capabilities. Contributes to a world-class data science organization, assisting in continuous quality improvement initiatives and refinement of analytics offerings.
Provides data analysis and insights to stakeholders to enable data-driven quality improvement project and decision making: Translates complex data into insights and compelling stories; Presents data models, analyses, and visuals (including dynamic visuals such as dashboards) to internal and external stakeholders. Iterates and refines based on feedback; Makes recommendations and provides actionable insight to stakeholders based on analysis; Partners with operational and clinical leaders to implement recommendations and provides consultation as needed.
Assists the UR Medicine leadership team in representing reporting, analytical, and data science opportunities to system leaders and department chairpersons. Directs a team of employees accountable for supporting the data analyses required by key stakeholders and Senior Leadership. Designs and performs the analyses of data utilizing advanced analytics tools and methodologies to derive actionable insights from clinical data. Responsible for the production of system-wide ad hoc reports, recurring reports and dashboards. Ensures analyses and reports optimally tailored to meet stakeholders’ objectives through iterative design process. Ensures the reports and dashboards are accurate, well defined, and validated to ensure the interpretation of the analyses is truly actionable.
Acts as a member of the CQI Data Store Steering Committee, Quality Management Team, Info QICC, and other committees, as appropriate. Works independently with users and applicable support teams to integrate a wide array of analytical tools and processes in support of the respective LOBs. Provides input into the Quality Institute’s Service Level Agreement for LOBs supported by the team and manages resources within the approved levels. Negotiates and develops Service Level Agreements with UR Medicine customers as appropriate.
Demonstrates the ability to think creatively in order to methodically reach desired goals in a wide scope and breadth of reporting and data science needs. Responds constructively and with innovation to end-user requirements by understanding the clinical/ quality/ operational problem, the analytical requirements and the level of service the user expects. Establishes metrics for assessing effectiveness of program. Serves as a data science resource to the project, where appropriate. Develops project plans and resource estimates, and directs project resources towards achievement of established deliverables. Provides leadership for Quality Institute analytical projects. Develops and deploys applications to address business and clinical needs by: providing scalable solutions and collaborating on dissemination efforts; creating and implementing data science solutions to support analytical efforts and expand dashboard capabilities; leading team in developing, managing and executing project plans.
Provides leadership and coordination for data science projects at the request of the Office of the CEO/ CMO/ UR Medicine system leaders. Represents the area of responsibility to University officials and external customers. Keeps abreast of trends and data science developments in the field by self-study, participating in job-related seminars, conferences and courses and liaison with vendors. Represents the University in organizations and initiatives at the local, state and national level, as appropriate.
Formulates and monitors operational and capital budgets for assigned areas of responsibility. Manages billing and service processes for related responsibilities including tracking and reconciliation, for rated services. Participates in the preparation of quarterly spend plans.

Bachelor’s degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Data Science, Engineering, Finance, Instructional Technology required
Master’s degree preferred
5 years of related experience required
Equivalent combination of education and experience required
3 years in a supervisory capacity
Expertise with technology in the respective area required
Experience building programs that deliver long term success required
Strong analytic, qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into phased deliverables. required
Ability to lead a team to produce valuable results required
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, and ability to interact with all levels of staff, as appropriate, to communicate, and to process communications from others required
Exemplary speaking and presentation skills required
