Little Shelter Sanctuary is Hiring! – Sanctuary Kennel Attendant – Dog Program
The mission of the Little Shelter is to adopt and save as many dogs and cats as possible.
However some dogs may be overlooked for adoption due to behavioral or medical issues.
To meet the needs of these special dogs, Little Shelter’s Sanctuary was created to let them
live out their lives in peace.
Many of these dogs are adoptable but just needed the extra space that the Sanctuary
provides. Each dog has his or her own special needs, which kennel assistants will take care
of on a daily basis. Daily tasks include feeding, cleaning, walking, training, socialization,
rehabilitation, and more.
Kennel attendants work under the direct supervision of the Sanctuary Manager individual with
each of the dogs. The property is 110 acres of fields, woods, streams, dog runs, and a 2 ½ acre
pond that the dogs enjoy swimming in. Following the Sanctuary Manager’s directives they will
take their assigned dogs out to play in the pen or on walks through the property trails on a daily
basis for mental enrichment and exercise.
Responsibilities:
Feed and provide fresh water for dogs
Restock the feed area
Assist with morning/afternoon/evening relief walks as well as enrichment time which will
include walks and playtime
Clean and disinfect all dog rooms, runs, bedding, food/water bowls and toys
Clean/Sanitize all the different areas of assigned Shelter space including: sweeping,
mopping, scrubbing floors, dusting, and other cleaning duties as assigned
Wash laundry
Notify management of dogs that show sudden changes in behavior or appearance
Collect stool/urine samples as needed
Work with assigned dogs on behavioral issues
Ability to responsibly control dogs of varying size, strength and energy levels including
dogs that are behaviorally at risk
Develop an understanding of specific dogs body language and behavior
Must be dependable, responsible and work independently with little supervision
Must possess patience and a friendly personality
Must be able to follow proper safety procedures at all times
Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written directives
Abe to walk, bend, stand and reach during entire shift duration
Ability to problem solve, able to think on your feet
Various other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age
Must have transportation
Must be comfortable working with and handling difficult dogs
Must be dependable, responsible and punctual
Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written directives
Able to perform moderately heavy physical labor – must be able to lift 30 lbs
Previous animal-related work experience not required but a plus
