At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. Duties Description Fish and Wildlife Technicians perform a variety of technical assignments to support the management of New York State fish, wildlife, marine and ecological resources. The general duties of a Fish & Wildlife Technician 2 in Marine Resources are to carry out activities that promote the protection, management, and restoration of New York State's marine species and these species' habitats. More specific tasks may include the following activities:- Supervise lower level staff Participation in the management of marine fish, crustacean and shellfish resources in State waterso conducting field surveys and biological sampling programs (including lab work)o management of State marine aquaculture programso data entryo subordinate staff supervisiono maintenance of field equipment Participation in the collection, processing, and management of fishery harvest data and commercial fishing quotas:o participation in fishery tagging programs.o communication with commercial and recreational fishing stakeholderso processing Vessel Trip Report (VTR) and angler fishing log datao extensive use of internal and external database programs Assistance in the protection of public health by monitoring the sanitary status of local shellfish growing areaso collection of water and shellfish sampleso assisting in the monitoring of harmful algal blooms Miscellaneous tasks include preparation of reports, participation in meetings, and aiding, as needed, the work of other Marine Resources units. The incumbent will be expected to undertake state and/or federal provided training, as available, that will enhance skills pertinent to job responsibilities.
