The Food Inspector 1 is a competitive class position that requires an examination. Candidates that are eligible and whose scores are immediately reachable on the eligible list that results from this examination will be canvassed for this position. This position is tenure-bearing. Minimum Qualifications: Provisional Appointment: If there is no appropriate eligible list of at least three people willing to accept permanent appointment for this geographic location, the Department may nominate a qualified person for a provisional appointment under the provisions of Section 65 of the Civil Service Law. Provisional Appointment Minimum Qualifications: Either 1. 120 semester credit hours which MUST include 24 credit hours in: chemistry, microbiology, food quality control, epidemiology, entomology, food technology, food science, food processing technology, food sanitation, dairy science, biology, environmental sanitation, environmental health, human physiology, genetics, animal science, nutrition/dietetics, or medical sciences;Or 2. 60 semester credit hours which MUST include 24 credit hours in: chemistry, microbiology, food quality control, epidemiology, entomology, food technology, food science, food processing technology, food sanitation, dairy science, biology, environmental sanitation, environmental health, human physiology, genetics, animal science, nutrition/dietetics, or medical sciences AND two years of experience where your primary responsibility is in the areas of environmental health protection and sanitation of food establishments, or quality control of food products at a wholesale food manufacturing facility.Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. Duties Description The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is seeking a permanent Food Inspector Trainee 1 to work within the division of Food Safety and Inspection’s Animal Feed and Pet Food Inspection Unit. The Division of Food Safety and Inspection is implementing a more robust animal feed and pet food inspection unit to incorporate an enhanced inspection program as we move toward the adoption of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Animal Feed rule. This program will be designed to monitor compliance with established standards through inspections and sampling activities as a mechanism to minimize potential hazards, and the incumbent will be work on creating the necessary policies and procedures and educating the establishments on this implementation. Specific Duties Include: Conducting food safety inspections of animal food establishments to ensure sanitary, wholesome, and pure food in accordance with applicable laws and regulations; Prevent fraud, adulteration and misrepresentation in the processing, packaging, storage, distribution, and sale of animal feed and food products by educating food establishment operators on applicable laws and regulations; Sampling food products to verify food safety controls, product labeling, and contents, conduct complaint investigations; Issuing written notices, letters, and reports citing food establishment violations and enforcement actions; Perform the regulatory and enforcement functions of the animal feed inspection program; Provide effective and uniform administration of the laws and rules within the agency’s jurisdiction. This is a PEF-represented position that offers a competitive starting salary of $47,925/ year (G-13) with excellent benefits.
