The Impact You Can Make The Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of laboratory duties within the assigned department, in order to provide appropriate service levels to both internal and external customers. The Laboratory Assistant I will be proficient in one of the following, the Laboratory Assistant II will be proficient in two of the following, and a Laboratory Assistant III will be proficient in all of the following: Laboratory Customer Service Phlebotomy Specimen Processing Team Impact Assists in the training of new laboratory staff in customer service Communicates outpatient compliance and regulatory policies to patients Responds to incoming inquiries regarding test result information by accessing the laboratory information system or lab report. May give verbal results to the inpatient floor and physician office via phone or fax results per provider request. Covers for both the core lab and pathology department Responds to incoming inquiries regarding test result information be accessing the laboratory information system or reference lab reports. May give verbal reports to floors and provider offices via phone or fax test results per provider request. May initiate a variety of problem-solving procedures in response to customer inquiries. Assists in resolving billing issues Generates, collates, and sorts patient reports, according to provider/patient site Performs phlebotomy on patients utilizing Glens Falls Hospital policies and procedures. Collection may be on inpatients or outpatients. Includes traveling to nursing homes to collect specimens from the residents. Staffs and maintains specimen collection centers according to NYSDOH guidelines. Is responsible for interacting independently , on an annual basis, with the NYSDOH Clinical Inspector Prepares patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue) for testing by internal laboratory departments, as well as for those being sent out to a reference laboratory. Specimen preparation will include the ordering of tests in the laboratory information system, generation of barcoded computer labels, labeling of specimens, and delivery of specimens to departments. Specimen preparation may also include receiving in specimens in the computer system, centrifuging, and aliquoting specimens into proper containers to ensure specimen integrity to meet lab protocols for testing Registers specimens based on written requisitions while following the guideline of Corporate Compliance by ensuring the correct physician, diagnosis, tests and patient information are utilized Education/Accredited Programs High School Diploma/GED. Phlebotomy experience preferred Experience in a Healthcare/Customer Service Environment or similar setting preferred Licenses/Certifications/Registrations None Skills/Abilities Medical Terminology preferred Proficient in keyboarding Ability to use a computer and required applications Ability to read, analyze, interpret business documents, policies and procedures. Ability to effectively communicate both directly and via phone/email sensitive information and respond to questions from patients, customers, provider, coworkers, and vendors Ability to recognize and solve basic problems regarding area of responsibility and to refer involved issues to the department supervisor Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers Ability to work under stressful situations and able withstand the sight of blood Ability to prioritize tasks Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in simple written, oral, or diagram form Ability to read and comprehend departmental SOPS and safety manuals. Ability to utilize basic ordering and inquiry functions within the Laboratory Information System. Salary Range The expected base rate for this Glens Falls, New York, United States-based position is $17.25 to $22.50 per hour. Exact rate is determined on a case-by-case basis commensurate with experience level, as well as education and certifications pertaining to each position which may be above the listed job requirements.
