Join us and we can make a difference together.About this RoleCarrier is seeking talented and motivated principal investigators, who are passionate about maturing early-stage disruptive technologies, to join Carrier’s Innovation Hub Americas and develop novel air conditioning and heat pump systems to enable sustainable climate control solutions for the future. The Innovation Hub Americas, located in Syracuse, NY, is the North American center for Carrier’s product design and development, as well as groundbreaking innovative research. We ideate, design, verify and validate new products and technologies across Carrier’s global portfolio, supporting Carrier’s goal to be the global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.The Principal Research Engineer will lead the development of next-generation air conditioning and heat pump systems, focusing on novel thermodynamic cycles and refrigerant-free systems for application in Carrier’s HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration) products. The responsibilities will include identifying concepts and technologies to meet performance targets and advancing them through assessment, validation, and demonstration following Carrier’s internal processes. The individual will be responsible for the entire technology development by leading and managing the strategy, planning, and execution of the development efforts along with driving alignment within the project teams and various stakeholders. The role requires working with cross-functional teams, global experts, suppliers, and research institutions to deliver innovative solutions that align with Carrier’s strategic goalsThis role would be part of an international network of experts focused on supporting Carrier’s global businesses. It will involve working with different internal groups, new suppliers and industries, as well as universities and consortiums to assist in identifying new research for consideration. Coordination of activities across disciplines within Carrier will also be necessary to ensure the proper application of these technologies and their implementation within Carrier’s products portfolio.Key Responsibilities
Lead and drive the vision and development of novel and disruptive HVAC&R technologies in alignment with Carrier’s strategic goals and vision.
Conduct new technology scouting, evaluation of applicability for Carrier relevant solution, develop business value and plan for technology development and demonstration.
Ensure robust technical execution of technology maturation projects by following Carrier specific processes and best practices.
Develop and manage IP strategy, technology risks, business case and go to market strategy in alignment with appropriate stakeholders.
Drive technology development by leading multi-functional technical teams comprising of subject matter experts.
Employ project management best practices to develop strategic plans to forecast and track milestones, resources and deliverables.
Develop clear goals for project teams in alignment with key stakeholders to ensure robust execution of technology development process.
Provide technical leadership to project teams and drive clarity of vision, execution plans and alignment between different tasks and resources.
Demonstrate adaptability to pivot quickly and align project teams with changing requirements and project scope.
Support the identification, creation and growth of disruptive projects pipelines, aligned with themes in disruptive HVAC&R, sustainability and service.
Review journals, patents and publicly available data to synthesize technical feasibility and risks, as well as propose strategies. This responsibility includes working with global team members, other functions with Carrier and external partners/universities.
Required Qualifications
Master of Science degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Automotive, Thermal or Chemical or Systems Engineering.
7+ years of experience in thermal engineering or systems engineering related to technology development.
3+ years of experience in heat transfer or thermodynamic cycles or fluid dynamics and component and system level designs and analysis.
3+ years of experience in working with physics-based modeling tools (CFD, FEA, System modeling) and knowledge of associated best practices.
3+ years of experience in developing system and component level testing protocols for technology performance demonstrations.
3+ years in model-based systems development approach.
3+ years of experience in electro-mechanical thermal systems development.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in in Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive, Thermal, Chemical or Systems Engineering, or similar (e.g. Electrical Engineering).
6+ years of working experience in HVAC&R or adjacent related industrial application.
Deep understanding of HVAC&R systems, thermodynamic cycles and psychrometric analysis.
2+ yrs of experience working on x-Calorics technologies.
Ability to work with others on design teams to understand and translate design and process engineering requirements into components, sub-systems and products.
In depth knowledge of refrigerant-free heating and cooling technologies.
Demonstrated experience in identifying novel technologies and performing value assessment for product.
Knowledge of cost optimization.
Knowledge of dehumidification technologies and materials.
Knowledge of chemistry and/or chemical engineering.
Knowledge of statistics, reliability and economic analysis.
Knowledge of system engineering methodologies, design of experiments.
Familiarity with technology development process, including NASA/ISO 16290 technology readiness levels (TRLs).
Familiarity with function, components and modeling of electromechanical HVAC systems including heat exchangers, compressors, motors and structural elements or similar systems.
Work in psychrometric chamber set-up and troubleshooting.
Experience with design of experiments, test rig design, measurement system identification and implementation, instrumentation requirements development, measurement uncertainty analysis, test rig commissioning, conducting multiparameter input testing, troubleshooting systems, test data reduction and validation.
Familiarity with specialty software for analysis, tracking and simulation (Minitab/JMP, COMSOL, LabVIEW, Ansys/Nastran FEA, etc.).
Experience in working with universities, consortia, external labs and/or start-ups, coordinating feasibility studies and evaluations through statements of work or joint development agreements.
Team oriented personality, capability to work well in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.
Proven self-driven attitude and capable of leading development projects autonomously, while gathering feedback from appropriate experts and stakeholders.
Experience with managing and prioritizing tasks to execute and lead multiple complex projects simultaneously.
Expertise in development of computational models for components and systems.
Familiarity with using HPC and cloud-based platforms for computation at scale.
Familiar with system optimization techniques and their application to modeling and system design.
