Description:Performs analytical assays and supports product development efforts in the R&D department of an innovative food company. The company produces innovative foods and beverages utilizing the company’s new and existing technologies and manufacturing capabilities. Work requires basic use of scientific methods and techniques gained through prior training and experience. This position requires a basic understanding of experimental theory and applies basic analytical skills to complete assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot problems with experimental design and execution.Roles and Responsibilities: Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes good technique associated with biochemistry, chemistry and biology. Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, texture analyzer, light microscope, and/or utilize laminar flow hood. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Performs protein quantification, isolation and characterization with industry standard methods such as SDS-PAGE, Dumas nitrogen analysis, Lowry/Bradford protein assays, size exclusion chromatography, and HPLC. Regularly record experimental work upon completion in electronic notebook systems. Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g., calibrating and alignment. Perform carbohydrate quantification, isolation and characterization in-house or through a third-party lab including sugar and fiber analyses. Work closely with scientists within the R&D to help facilitate new technology and product development activities. Read relevant scientific literature to aid in experimental design. Create reports for R&D support as needed. Train research assistants, students, and other related staff in research techniques and analysis.Skills:Laboratory, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Cell culture, Research & developmentAdditional Skills & Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. Working knowledge of organic chemistry/biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and quantitative analysis. Ability to perform mathematical calculations as it pertains to experimental designs and data analysis. Willingness to learn new techniques. Be proactive, dependable and flexible.Preferred Qualifications: Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred. Substantial experience with gel electrophoresis, including gel preparation, SDS-PAGE, Lowry/Bradford protein quantification, Dumas nitrogen analysis, and protein isolation/purification. Experience using commercially available testing kits and industry standard testing protocols for research projects. Good understanding of lab safety and good laboratory practice. On-site interviews may include a short test of basic math and general chemistry/biochemistry knowledge.
