ResponsibilitiesPosition Summary:Reporting to the Director of the Office of Disability Resources, the Sr Disability Compliance Counselor is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Acts as Amended (ADAA) and the New York State Human Rights Law for students with disabilities. The Sr Counselor oversees reasonable accommodations for a caseload of undergraduate and graduate students registered with the Office of Disability Resources as assigned, provides leadership and support with programming and outreach initiatives and oversees the facilitation of support services in the Director's absence.Responsibilities:Provides direct disability services to students by appointment and on a walk-in basis. Performs a complex analysis of an individual’s disability status and subsequent reasonable accommodations through individual conferences, review of and students’ medical, educational, and neuropsychological reports, and an evaluation of the impact a potential disability barrier may have on students’ access to their academic, residential, and other University experiences. Establishes and maintains the implementation of appropriate academic adjustments for students with disabilities within a variety of University colleges and settings as assigned.Develops, delivers, and evaluates disability access outreach programming, including legal requirements, to University faculty, programs, and offices. Provides individual consultation to members of the University staff regarding accessibility and accommodations required for students with disabilities. Consults with faculty on inclusive teaching practices and accessible course materials. Participates in timely professional development and contributes to the development of innovative and creative practices to meet mandates for equal access. Maintains a thorough knowledge about disabilities, inclusion, and Universal instructional design. Stays abreast of Federal and State laws regarding equal access as well as trends in higher education.Provides ongoing support and guidance to faculty members based on course design and requirements with respect to managing the accommodation process for students with disabilities. Collaborates with a network of other University offices to coordinate services for students with disabilities, such as academic support, academic advising, and emotional support. Coordinates access services with other University offices to ensure barrier-free access to classrooms and University properties.Assists the Director of Disability Resources with development of policies and procedures aligned with department and University mission and vision. Provides leadership to staff and oversees office in the Director’s absence. Leads and/or supports the office with special initiatives and projects as assigned.Processes housing and dining accommodation requests, including tracking and collecting relevant documentation. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with relevant providers and outside agencies in order to secure funding and other forms of support as appropriate. Creates and maintains accurate student records according to professional industry (AHEAD) standards.Other duties as assignedQualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with major coursework in psychology, education, social work, rehabilitation counseling or closely related field
Master’s degree (preferred)
5 years of related work experience providing service to individuals with disabilities
or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in developing systems and policies in a higher education setting (preferred)
Experience with creating outreach and programming opportunities for students (preferred)
Knowledge of ADA/Section 504 requirements and regulations
Demonstrated organizational skills with clear attention to detail
