OverviewThis position is responsible for assisting the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) in developing and implementing investment strategies for Tompkins Financial Advisors (TFA), and managing the portfolio management process in TFA. This role is responsible for managing investment strategies for the firm’s clients and will serve as an investment expert for TFA. The position manages TFA client investment portfolios within the investment philosophy established by the TFA Investment Committee. This position will partner with other TFA business development team members to exceed client expectations in their experience working with TFA. This position is responsible for meeting with clients to promote, educate, review, design and implement investment portfolios that meet client objectivesResponsibilities

Manage investment strategies, including but not limited to, the individual Core Equity and Dividend Income stock portfolios, and the TFA, SAP and ESG strategies:

Lead research efforts by sourcing and monitoring investments through a qualitative and quantitative research process and due diligence.

Have a deep understanding of fundamental research, including financial statement analysis, financial modeling, factor-based investing and valuation. Analyze business models through a company’s 10-K, conference call transcripts, and research reports.

Perform 3rd party manager oversight in mutual funds and ETFs, manager selection and sourcing of new ideas – meet regularly with fund managers and research analytics of fund performance, risk-based measures, and attribution reporting.

Stay abreast of current news and events related to the global economies, global markets and monitoring of portfolio holdings.

Be a subject matter expert on all asset classes, including global equities and fixed income investments. Have a deep understanding of the macroeconomic environment and the impact on portfolio risk exposures.

Have in-depth knowledge of portfolio construction, asset allocation, liquidity preferences and tax issues.

Encourage spirited, diverse and independent thinking among other members of the investment committee, with the goal of sourcing best ideas.

Lead business development activities related to investments, including the construction of investment proposals to prospective clients.

Make presentations to audiences promoting TFA – including investment discussions with prospects, clients, stakeholders and COIs.

Publish white-papers for distribution to both internal colleagues and external clients, prospects and COIs.

Help lead investment committee discussions and serve as backup in the absence of CIO.

Be an effective communicator, both written and verbal.

Have substantial knowledge of investment analytic platforms, such as Bloomberg, Morningstar, and FactSet.

Manage the investment portfolio management process:

Participate in the formulation of investment policy as a member of the Investment Committee.

Manage investment portfolios under guidance from the Investment Policy of the Trust Investment & Administration Sub-Committee.

Make trade recommendations for WA’s & TO’s to be executed by TFA traders.

Assist WA’s & TO’s in preparation of investment proposals and presentations.

Meet with clients, prospects and COIs as needed.

Review, evaluate and monitor accounts as follows:

Assist in the completion of annual reviews and others as scheduled.

Verify that investments are of fiduciary quality and within departmental guidelines.

Monitor accounts for over-concentration of assets, adherence to target allocation guardrails and non-approved holdings.

Follow up on account reviews to ensure proper investment documentation.

Provide supervision to portfolio managers, wealth advisors and trust officers.

Assist Trust Department manager(s) by providing training and guidance to all other staff on systems and applications with investment content.

Assist in developing and executing a business development plan that focuses on partnering with Wealth Advisors and Trust Officers to prospect, seek referrals from existing clients, partnering with other TFC business lines such as Retail & Commercial Banking, Residential Lending and Tompkins Insurance and networking in the community to promote the Tompkins brand.

Partner with Wealth Advisors and Trust Officers in interviewing clients and prospects to identify financial goals and fully understand their needs, risk tolerance, time horizon, return expectations and market conditions to select investment strategies that meet the client’s objectives.

Implement investment plans including trade coordination, ongoing rebalancing, Reg. 9 reviews and conduct ongoing investment reviews for client portfolios. Buy and sell securities in a client’s account as needed to maintain a specific investment strategy or objective over time.

Serve as the primary point of contact for investment-related questions and take ownership of conversations with clients to ensure understanding of their portfolio’s performance.

Participate in client meetings, upon request, to review portfolios, provide updates, deliver performance results and discuss investment outlooks.

Maintain relationships through regular contact with investor clients regarding market conditions, updated investment research and economic trends. As a fiduciary duty, portfolio managers must meet with investor clients at least annually to ensure investment objectives have not shifted and current portfolio allocations are still in line with the clients’ needs.

Create, promote and deliver presentations to promote TFA services and provide education to targeted audiences externally.

Participate in creating and maintaining investment marketing materials including pitchbooks, economic/market updates, strategy fact sheets, strategy performance reports and quarterly market commentary.

Write and distribute investment talking points as needed and provide education to wealth advisors and trust officers.

Participate as an active member of the TFA Investment Committee, conduct due diligence and review of current investments and overall asset allocation.

Understand investment strategies in order to serve as a proxy to clients on behalf of the Investment Committee. Maintain a deep understanding of performance and attribution.

Maintain expert knowledge on our investment holdings (stocks, ETFs, and funds), investment process and trade rationale. Act as a proxy for the investment team members.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Business Management or other related field, or an Associate’s Degree plus two (2) years of work experience.

Minimum of ten (10) years’ investment management experience covering client relationship management as well as portfolio development and implementation.

Proven ability to uncover client personal investment goals and objectives to create a personalized and meaningful plan.

Effective written and verbal communication skills; acute attention to detail; exceptional presentation skills.

Expert knowledge of investments and trading is required.

Must be customer-focused and have a desire and ability to communicate frequently with clients, prospects and COIs.
