Performs responsible supervisory law enforcement and security work directing the activities of the assigned facilities and personnel. An employee in this class directs the activities associated with Police and Security operations. Administrative duties include purchasing equipment and supplies, maintaining equipment, coordinating in-service training, and providing input on policy, hiring and budget matters. Supervisory responsibilities include managing the daily work activities of the police and security staff assigned; performance coaching, evaluation, and discipline; making work assignment and staffing decisions; conducting meetings to include discussions on work activities; reviewing law enforcement reports and providing technical direction on matters related to the law enforcement work and legal paper processing; and conducting internal investigations. This work requires the application of modern law enforcement techniques, sound judgment, and independent initiative in pursuit of work objectives. Work involves frequent public contact, which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and State and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers. The employee is subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as atmospheric conditions, noise, vibration, and physical conditions. Employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and review of reports. The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. Education/formal training/licensure/certification experience: Bachelor’s degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or related field supplemented with 40 hours of supervisory training and considerable experience in law enforcement including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional skills and requirements: Possession of a valid NC driver's license. Certification by the North Carolina Justice Training and Standards Commission as a law enforcement officer. Prefer advanced law enforcement certification or ability to obtain within established timeframe. Prefer North Carolina General Instructor certification. High level of computer literacy and technical competency, office automation skills; strong time management and organizational skills; ability to multi-task and participate in multiple projects at one time; strong interpersonal and verbal skills to include telephone skills and strong customer service focus; strong writing skills.
