This position is responsible for supporting the Sr. Manager of Global Trade Compliance , Manager Trade Programs and Classifications and the overall corporate regulatory/Customs compliance initiatives. The incumbent is the subject matter expert and liaison with governmental regulatory agencies, US and foreign Customs agencies, Global logistics partners, externally managed Customs brokerage partners, HBI cross-functional areas and manufacturing facilities. This subject matter expertise includes all aspects relating to HBI’s regulatory/global trade compliance, including Customs valuation and classifications, duty and reconciliation programs, trade program requirements/management, oversight of import documentation and audits.

  • Direct the HBI Customs brokerage partners on day-to-day trade and import compliance activities to achieve issue resolution and timely/accurate Customs release of international shipments as they move through the supply chain.
  • Verify Customs free trade program requirements are met before allowing such claims to be made for imported and/or exported goods.
  • Verify Import documentation to ensure that same is accurately prepared and in compliance with HBI internal procedures, as well as all U.S. and foreign Customs/regulatory requirements
  • Daily Database Management: Performs continual data management, data cleansing and ongoing maintenance of the HBI Customs Harmonized Tariff Database and corresponding HBI external Team Site. Direct and control the data management and access to the data portals.
  • Daily Database Management: Maintains the HBI Free Trade Program Certification Database that drives the Customs qualification process and Customs duty determination/assignment.
  • Analyzes finished apparel, raw materials, equipment and other miscellaneous items that are moving internationally to assign the correct Harmonized Tariff Number as required by global Customs regulatory agencies.
  • Acts as a resource to the Trade Specialist role during shifts in workload, volumes, expected and unexpected absences and/or cross-training.
  • Acts as a back-up for the Manager, Trade Programs and Classifications attending meetings, conference calls and overall acts as a representative of the department as needed.
  • Manages and controls the timely preparation and distribution of detailed US Customs financial and import data reporting from external Brokerage partners into electronic record storage systems.
  • Prepares ad hoc Customs financial and import reports using the US Customs database portals. Perform comparative analysis of the reporting for Customs valuation.
    • Works with outside Legal Counsel and with HBI finance associates to resolve any concerns regarding the data presented for reconciliation.
    • Directs the external Brokers on filing the Customs reconciliation data with US Customs as required by law
  • Assists and is a key participant in the post-Customs entry documentation review process and performs assessments on selected HBI Import/Export Entry documentation. Works closely with Customs Brokers, Trade Compliance Group associates and cross-functional areas to ensure integrity in the Import documentation and shipping processes.
  • Develop, create and contribute to reporting and presentation needs related to the Logistics and Trade Compliance communications.
  • Prepares weekly KPI’s of trade and import data to identify trends, areas of trade compliance concern and any trade related issues that may pertain to HBI’s supply chain.
  • Issue Corrective Actions to relevant HBI personnel and external partners in an effort to resolve and eradicate any regulatory/compliance matters and ensure that future international transactions are compliant.
  • Train new Trade Specialists, as well as educating HBI cross-functional associates regarding import processes, requirements and documentation.
  • Prepare responses to US Customs regulatory audit requests
  • Arrange for Customs Brokerage/clearance processes & procedures for all US ports of entry to support the shifts in the supply chain.
  • Liaise with other cross-functional areas in order to execute effective and relevant trade/compliance activities to support the organization’s sales, purchasing, materials management, production and overall operating functions.
  • Prepare and analyze US Customs duty/financial reporting to ensure required monthly duty payments take place

This is a minimally supervised role requiring the incumbent to demonstrate initiative, specific subject knowledge/expertise and leadership. The incumbent must be able to make timely decisions and provide direction in accordance with business needs and objectives.

  • Incumbent must be able to communicate effectively,( both in written and verbal form) , at all levels of the organization up to the Vice President level. The position must be able to effectively communicate and work closely with associates at all levels of internal and external operations, as well as headquarters employees.
  • Education/Degrees: Bachelor Degree strongly desired. Associates Degree on track to obtain a 4-year degree would be considered only if other highly desirable qualifications were present
  • Special Skills: Highly proficient in Microsoft Suite with proven ability using excel, access and ability to learn/utilize various types of other software/information systems.
  • Knowledge of Customs Harmonized Tariff Classification, import/export processes, trade program compliance relating to apparel/textiles

Preferred Experience, skills, and education that are not required for job but beneficial to the role:

  • Customs Broker certification highly desirable
  • Experience with importing/exporting via various trade lanes and modes of transportation
  • Knowledge of organizational supply chain and IT related systems
  • Experience in trade program management and regulatory audit processes
  • Experience in managing, developing and coaching others
  • Data Analytics and data management skills highly desirable
