Job Overview

This position will lead our data acquisition, maintenance, verification, and analysis efforts. It requires someone with a passion for the details, and the ability to apply that passion over hundreds of millions of records. It’s a chance to build a system (and a culture) that does it right, and to claim ownership over the fastest-growing part of a fast-growing business.

The job entails handling all aspects of data within the company, including relationships and interactions with data vendors; download, local load, testing, and verification of nightly data; design (if not implementation) of data tools and interfaces for both software and humans, including analysis of client usage data; upkeep of client relationship data; and documentation of it all.

The right candidate will be detail-oriented and meticulous, while also being aware of the ambiguities that come with large amounts of data. They will be a systematic thinker, without being overly dogmatic, and put accuracy and timeliness at the top of their priority list, while also being aware of the business realities that govern our clients and our work work.

The candidate will interact daily with both the company’s president, and its developers and customer support reps, and should be comfortable both speaking and writing clearly. There will be very little direct client interaction and no travel.

The role is currently as an individual contributor, but management opportunities are possible as the amount of data used by the company continues to expand.

Responsibilities

● Interactions with data vendors, including discovery of new sources, and addressing quality and delivery issues with existing ones

● Data and database documentation, including what’s created in-house and provided by vendors

● Data downloads, local loads, testing, and verification scripts, including checking nightly output, addressing problems, and designing useful expansions

● Data back-ups and verification, integrated with other aspects of the company’s disaster recovery plan

● Schema design and versioning, including migrations to new designs

● Query design, in conjunction with developers

● Capture and analysis of database query-speed issues, including slow log tracking, and indexing improvements

● Database redundancy issues, including failover

● Design of tools to make data more accessible and easier to manage and maintain, for both securities data and company client data

● Separate and distinct production and development environments, including the anonymization or whole-cloth creation of development-side data

● Analysis of client usage data with an eye towards business development

Skills

● SQL schema and query design

● Database administration

● MySQL

● Strong spoken and written English, both for internal communication and documentation

● Attention to detail with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness, tempered with business realities

● Python 3 (a plus)

● Power BI or other data analysis tools (a plus)

● R or other data analysis languages (a plus)
