What you'll do

As an R&D Principal Cloud Engineer, you will bring a hands-on, can-do attitude and specialize in architecture and automation for our cloud and on-premises endeavors involving infrastructure and services such as Azure, AWS, GCE, OpenShift, OpenStack, Tanzu, and Anthos. In this role, you will use your intellectual, communication, and technical skills, working with internal customers across multiple divisions to understand their needs and translate those into solutions that achieve SAS business objectives in a collaborative environment. You will use your proven track record as a Principal Engineer to set the standards for sizing, building, deploying, managing, and monitoring fault-tolerant, 24/7 application infrastructures. You will use your ability to adapt and react to complex issues in a timely manner as our business needs and objectives evolve. Our work involves cross-team and cross-division collaboration with many exciting opportunities for pushing the boundaries of the latest in technology while developing robust solutions in our fast-paced industry.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Drive projects to requirements, always advising of options and available methods of achieving an outcome, never being entrenched to a single approach.
  • Design processes with automation and self-service as first-class requirements.
  • Designs, implements, and manages secure, scalable, enterprise-grade, performance software-driven infrastructure to meet R&D requirements.
  • Work with the R&D team to design, develop, and refine existing approaches that further our journey to CI/CD.
  • Always be able to think from an information security perspective as to how infrastructure could and should be configured to enhance its security posture, balancing security with usability.

What we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related quantitative field or equivalent combination of exeperience/education
  • 10 years industry of infrastructure experience, including networking, storage, compute, bare metal, and hypervisor platforms.
  • 2 years industry experience of container-CI/CD experience, including containers (docker, rancher, Kubernetes, etc)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills; including practical, hands-on troubleshooting of software, infrastructure (hardware as well), and configuration issues. Including the ability to think analytically and methodically to bring resolution to issues encountered.
  • 8+ years of architecture experience applying a higher level of skills to establishing new operating paradigms, considering best practices and supportability of infrastructures.
  • 8+ industry years of experience in information security implementing security practices from an engineering and architectural POV into solutions.
  • 8+ years industry of coding/scripting background experience(preferrable Kustomize, Ansible)
  • 8+ years of leadership experience leading small, focused teams towards a technical goal.

Other knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Ability to think analytically and effectively communicate issues and solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of Cloud Computing, with the ability to technically dive deeper into one or more vendor public clouds or other private cloud solutions.
  • Strong understanding of containerization concepts, including microservices, pods, and security mechanisms.
  • Understanding of networking concepts, including switches, firewalls, access controls, and network segmentation.
  • Understanding of performance characteristics of various types of infrastructure and the downstream impact that infrastructure has on the performance of applications.
  • Knowledge and experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Knowledge and experience with Operating Systems management and troubleshooting.
