Job Description

Design, document and support standard and custom hydraulic and air (brake/pneumatic) control systems for assigned Harsco Rail products.

Primary Responsibilities: Work with the Systems Engineers and various Product Engineers to develop and validate new and modified Hydraulic/Pneumatic Systems on current production machines, equipment under development, and any custom-built equipment that requires custom hydraulic/pneumatic controls. Serving as part of the Product Engineering Team, ensure that the hydraulic & pneumatic systems on all new and modified products meet all requirements and applicable internal or external standards, as well as meeting or exceeding requirements as specified by our customers. Responsible for hydraulic and air systems design creation, analysis, documentation, and launch. Conceive, design, develop and analyze hydraulic systems, air systems, brake systems and develop methods to improve existing systems. Improve upon current hydraulic and pneumatic designs by reducing cost and increasing robustness and reliability. May produce or work with a team to produce full documentation for new product introduction (NPI). Communicate design activity status through group meeting, presentations, and design reviews. Meet deadlines to ensure projects are completed within acceptable time and cost targets. Make design trade-offs to ensure lowest overall cost, highest reliability and best in class performance. Work with manufacturers/vendors to source and evaluate purchased components and with manufacturing to produce or assemble manufactured components and assemblies. Travel to customer sites as needed to commission and troubleshoot equipment. Support external and internal customers in their requests Recommend and make improvements to current Hydraulic Systems Collaborate with colleagues in the design process; collaborate with other departments to provide a “best in class” quality product Identify Hydraulic/Pneumatic System-related training opportunities and help develop training needed to improve the overall organization’s development Contribute to systems-related troubleshooting and problem solving Identify cost-saving opportunities for the product or office Perform other reasonably related tasks as assigned by management. Qualifications

Basic Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering Minimum 5 years of experience in hydraulic system design CAD experience

Preferred Qualifications:Education or Experience International Fluid Power Society (IFPS) Certification highly desire Experience in brake system design, DOT and or AAR or similar Experience with both hydraulic and pneumatic systems and component selection Experience with Creo 4.0+ Experience with Hydraulic/Pneumatic simulation software such as Automation Studio and Simcenter Amesim Experience with PLM software. Teamcenter experience ideal. Demonstrated ability to identify applicable design requirements for a given application or product Knowledge of DFM, DFA, Design to Cost Experience designing heavy mobile equipment Experience creating and maintaining BOM’s

Interpersonal Skills Verbal and written fluency in English Demonstrated ability to lead courageously, maintaining a strong position amidst opposition to resolve important issues, and ability to navigate through complexity Hands-on, energetic, and a “can do” attitude Effectively understand, and communicate with individuals at all levels and locations of the organization

Technical Skills The ability to predictably and regularly attend work The ability to generate, read and understand hydraulic and air schematics, symbols, and related product drawings Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office product suite

Essential Functions: Provide expertise in the design and development of hydraulic and pneumatic systems The ability to predictably and regularly attend work. Must be able to occasionally work nights, weekends and variable schedule(s) as necessary Ability and willingness to travel approximately 10% of the time, both domestically and internationally, via automobile, commercial airline, and other public transportation Ability to walk on uneven surfaces (gravel) for up to 1 mile Ability to climb vertical ladder up to 10’ high Ability to bend, twist, crawl and work in confined spaces The ability to deal politely and professionally with customers and/or coworkers The ability to manage several projects at once The ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines The ability to follow direction or instruction The ability to use a computer to communicate, create, and access information
