Senior Principal EngineerJob DescriptionIndividual contributor with company-wide Engineering Leadership impact that coaches, mentors and guides innovation and development teams to technical excellence.   Role will also lead technology development efforts to assess the applicability and feasibility of new to the company and new to the world technologies.  The scope of work will include all business units of Fortune Brands Innovation including Water, Outdoors and Security.Innovate new product lines and expand existing product lines through:Identifying and applying new technologiesEvaluating the scope and technology readiness of complex projects and recommending the technical skills needed for successful execution.Analytically modeling complex mechanical systems.Developing and identifying intellectual property claims for Fortune Brands Innovations while working with project teams.Applying top level system engineering resulting in creative solutions.Guide the organization to technical excellence through:Using and continuously improving tools, processes, and higher-level technical thought.Providing subject matter expertise for simulation, problem solving and product design.Collecting and analyzing data to make recommendations for project direction and technical decisions.Understanding Product Development risks and guiding teams toward mitigation plans.Driving resolution of critical early decisions in product designMentor engineers throughout the company in problem solving, engineering, simulation, and system level design, including:Being accessible to team members for technical questions and guidance.Championing consistency in application of technologies, design methodology and testing among all product development teams.Deliver critical oversight and knowledge through review of product designs, including:Assuming role of technical gate keeper for organization.Propelling team to develop capable, cost-effective manufacturing and assembly processes concurrent to product design efforts.Making connections between all user requirements and assisting teams in the development of meaningful product specifications.Maintaining product platform mindset.Communicate technical information (data, designs, and updates) to both technical and non-technical audiences, including:Connecting subject matter experts, project teams and engineers to deliver robust solutions.Providing updates to Senior Leadership on status of programs.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.Minimum of 15 years of a wide range of experiences in mechanical or electromechanical product development designSuccessfully launched technically complex products (consumer, high volume products preferred).Subject matter expertise in multiple relevant product development activities such as:Analytical simulation of structural, fluid and electromechanical systemsDesign for manufacturing and assembly (including injection molding, casting, metal manufacturing)Complex dimensioning and tolerance stack-upsData collection and analysisMaterial science / selectionValve design and analysisSystem level engineeringSensor technology and applicationProblem solving techniques including fault tree, root cause analysis and TRIZ methodology.Effective communication and presentation skills with technically challenging subject matterCapability to make sense of complex sets of data and convert to useful information for stakeholders.High proficiency in dealing with ambiguity, especially early in projects.Demonstrated ability of collaborating with all levels and functions of an organization.
