Job Description: Civil Engineer to Civil Engineer SrThis position is posted as a range. Qualifications, education and experience will be considered in determining appropriate classification. Position responsibilities and accountabilities will vary accordingly based upon the assigned classification.Looking for a Civil Engineer with civil engineering experience (4 to 8 years) and leadership skills to perform civil site engineering assignments for Electric Substation and Transmission Line projects.This position is classified as Hybrid. Hybrid employees have some, but not all, work tasks that are required to be performed from an on-site location. As a hybrid employee, you will be required to report to the New Albany, Ohio office two days per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). The remainder of the week should be worked from home unless there is a field assignment or otherwise directed.Qualified candidates shall possess knowledge of civil site engineering principles through education and/or demonstrated project experience related to site grading, stormwater management, drainage design/analysis, roadway design, retaining walls, earthwork, erosion and sediment control, permitting, surveying, etc.Knowledge and/or experience using AutoCAD and Civil3D software is desired.Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering examination in preparation for future licensing as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred.Successful candidates will possess the proven ability to assess and recommend best case civil engineering solutions and collaborate with higher level non-civil engineers and other project stakeholders in solving civil engineering related challenges in consideration of safety, performance, cost, constructability, risk and liability.Travel (10%) is required for this position and will consist of trips to the field to diagnose civil engineering issues related to electric transmission lines and substations. Field assignments are generally within a 5-hour driving distance of the assigned office location. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day. Some OT may be required, as approved.Minimum Requirements:Engineer Grade 7: Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering in a program accredited by ABET; or 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Masters degree in civil engineering from a program accredited by ABET; Individuals with a PhD in civil engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET may be considered for entry into the organization at this level; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferred.Engineer Sr: Has typically acquired 6 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering in a program accredited by ABET, or 4 years of related engineering experience along with a Masters degree or PhD in civil engineering from a program accredited by ABET; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is encouraged and preferredABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering (non-ABET) plus a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelors program.Principal Accountabilities:1. Technical Expertise:Engineer Grade 7: Possesses advanced knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete extensive analyses. Understands interrelationship between systems and component equipment. Analyzes and recommends enhancements to business processes.Engineer Sr: Exhibits journey level proficiency plus advanced knowledge that enables the engineer to serve as a leader within the assigned organization. Keeps abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures and equipment. Understands and analyzes interrelationships between systems and component equipment. Interprets codes and regulations, and develops standards relevant to the area of assignment.2. Leadership & Guidance:Engineer Grade 7: Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to perform routine engineering work. Performs routine engineering activity independently. Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.Engineer Sr: Provides guidance and exercises judgment and discretion in providing guidance and direction to other Engineers. Leads, facilitates and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company as required to perform all routine engineering work. Ensures all work activities are performed in accordance with the policies, practices, standards and rules of the company and complies with the regulations and procedures required by external agencies. Promotes engineering professionalism and standards. Coordinates and conducts training sessions3. Planning & Organization Ability:Engineer Grade 7: Develops input necessary to forecast costs for the routine projects, improvements requisitions, etc. Monitors project status and recommends action accordingly. Prepares cost estimates using established standards. Develops understanding of the workflow for routine engineering projects. Accomplishes work according to plans and schedules established in conjunction with higher-level employees.Engineer Sr: Participates in the development of plans by establishing measurable goals, objectives and requirements for specific areas of responsibility. Coordinates the development of input necessary to establish projected cost of all projects. Is proficient in use of scheduling techniques (CPM, PERT, flow charts, etc.) for budget and planning activities. Identifies and initiates appropriate corrective action when objectives are not being met4. Problem Solving & Initiative:Engineer Grade 7: Resolves and initiates solutions to routine and/or moderately complex problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Identifies problems that are beyond the normal routine. Seeks out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.Engineer Sr: Identifies, clarifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to routine and/or complex problems that sometimes involve analysis of inadequate or conflicting data. Demonstrates the ability to divide problems into component steps. Consistently looks for and develops opportunities and presents new ideas and approaches5. Communication:Engineer Grade 7: Helps coordinate the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner.Engineer Sr: Coordinates the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner. Develops reviews or prepares reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively, in a manner suitable for presentation to management, professional societies, regulatory bodies, etc. Leads and facilitates meetings effectively6. Interpersonal Skills:Engineer Grade 7: Leads aspects of team effort. Effectively leverages skills developed from company programs such as Power Up & Lead.Engineer Sr: Possess collaborative and consensus building skills. Functions as a team leader and member. Networks upward and downward in several disciplines inside and outside the AEP system. Leverage network to get things done7. Decision Making:Engineer Grade 7: Makes decisions subject to review within established policies and procedures. Makes decisions that affect the work of the team. Analyzes options and risks. Extrapolates beyond known facts to reach logical conclusions.Engineer Sr: Makes decisions affecting plans and goals based on analysis of uncertain input and outcomes. Uses diverse approaches to make decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist. Can handle conflicting interests related to approaches on projects or studies. Analyzes options and risks and possesses the experience and knowledge to assess the risk of decisions and act accordingly. Makes decisions that affect the operations or results of the department and may have some impact on a major project8. Business Awareness & Characteristics:Engineer Grade 7: Understands organizational structure and the specific role and responsibility of their individual organizational unit. Demonstrates an understanding of the budgeting and approval process. Applies use of economic analysis techniques in problem solving.
