Job Description

This position will be responsible for project engineering. This will include the technical development, execution, and oversight of technology projects including capital improvements and plant-level process improvements.

The controls engineer will be expected to contribute to project management including scope development, scheduling and resource management, cost and procurement, risk management and quality assurance, and stakeholder management.

The position will also be responsible for plant controls engineering. This will include supporting the maintenance team by troubleshooting controls issues and implementing technical solutions.

This position is exempt, and some off-shift and weekend work will be expected.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

Activities and duties may vary depending upon site specific needs and daily work assignments. Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Project engineering, including:

    • The development of technical solutions and the required technical scope

    • The creation of technical documentation including written specifications, controls documentation, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams using Autodesk AutoCad

    • The limited use of mechanical layouts and drawings using Autodesk AutoCad and AutoCad Inventor

    • The limited execution of project work, such as wiring a panel

    • The oversight of skilled tradesincluding contracted controls engineers, electricians, and mechanical tradeswith the objective of ensuring work is completed to specification

  • Project management, including:

    • The documentation of business needs and the translation into technical scope

    • The creation of project gantt charts including the documentation of project tasks, resource allocation, and project schedules

    • The creation of project budgets

    • The creation of project procurement documents such as requests for quotations, technical specifications, and project contracts

    • The creation of project risks registers and quality assurance

    • Stakeholder management including the creation and execution of communication plans, capital requests, and management of change

  • Support EFP’s senior controls engineer with tasks including:

    • Troubleshooting industrial control systems such as pneumatic, hydraulic, position, and temperature systems using field devices, PLCs, and process historians

    • Troubleshooting industrial motion systems including AC and DC motors

    • Troubleshooting high voltage (480V) electrical systems

    • Troubleshooting communication networks with various protocols

    • Troubleshooting and creating user interfaces and alarming with AB PanelView technology

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to automation and controls engineering from an accredited university.

  • 0-5 years of experience in an engineering function within a manufacturing environment

  • Ability to create written controls documentation such as controls narratives and field device lists

  • Ability to use Autodesk AutoCad to create electrical drawings and wiring diagrams

  • Willingness to work limited offshift hours, including weekends, during projects and plant emergencies

  • Ability to translate a business need into a technical solution in an industrial environment

  • Ability to break a deliverable down into tasks, allocate resources to tasks, and schedule tasks

  • Ability to generate budgetary cost estimates and create project budgets

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills among all levels of the organization

  • Strong interest in the development of project management skills

  • Self-directed, self-starter who is eager to contribute

  • Dedicated to continued learning both within and outside controls engineering field

  • Ability to lead, communicate, and work in a team environment

Preferred, but not required

  • Limited ability to create and modify mechanical drawings with Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk AutoCad

  • Experience with procurement activities such as requests for quotations, technical specifications, and contracts

  • Experience managing project risks

  • Experience with technical quality assurance

  • Formal project management training (example PMP from the Project Management Institute)

  • Experience with industrial control systems such as pneumatic, hydraulic, position, and temperature control systems

  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLCs

  • Experience with Siemens, Allen Bradley, Eurotherm drives

  • Experience with high voltage (480V) electrical systems

  • Experience with AB PanelView HMIs
