Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a Controls Engineer to join our team at our site in Mentor, Ohio. In this position, you will collaborate with the Engineering and Maintenance Teams and provide improvement and troubleshooting of all electrical/electronic systems, such as programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and other drives/controls fixing to support the manufacturing site. You will be responsible for providing manufacturing support to resolve production and quality issues that arise on a day-to-day basis by performing effective root cause problem solving to solve process issues associated with equipment and/or machine performance.

Your primary responsibilities and essential functions include:

  • Assist in development of capital plans to support the divisional drives and controls strategy.

  • Develop and maintain drive, controls and SCADA system standard methodologies through collaboration with other process technology teams.

  • Perform a wide variety of functions such as installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment for generating, distributing, and utilizing electrical energy. Uses instruments to test circuits and replaces or installs new power, light, electronic and control circuits.

  • Provide project management for control related capital upgrades including scope and cost development, capital fund requests, installation oversight and cost/schedule management.

  • Provide project support to process, project and R&D engineers on all subjects electrical and controls related.

  • Solve electrical malfunctions, inspects circuits and wiring for shielding and grounding, and tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency.

  • Repair sophisticated electrical equipment, including motors, switches, switchboards, electrical mechanisms, automated machines, controls, panels, relays, circuit breakers, communication systems and alarms.

  • Work from schematics, drawings, layouts, or other specifications to locate and diagnose trouble in the electrical system or equipment.

  • Build and update electrical schematics and drawings.

  • Drive standardization of drive and controls systems and SCADA systems throughout the division; assess gaps against best practices and develop plans to close gaps.

  • Collaborate with the Maintenance and Engineering teams to ensure equipment reliability.

  • Identify safety issues, support safety initiatives, and recommend and implement effective solutions.

  • Provides support for technology upgrade projects to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency.

  • Conduct training of employees for accurate machine adjustments and operations

  • Maintain systems compliance with ISO 13485 and 21 CFR Part 820 Medical directives.

  • Maintain and assist with compliance of PSM (Process Safety Management) program.

  • Ensure all applicable electrical systems are compliant with Hazardous rated areas.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • HS diploma or equivalent requirement, with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering preferred

  • 5+ years of validated experience in controls or electrical engineering function in a manufacturing environment

  • Expertise in automation, drive and control systems

  • PLCs: Allen Bradley ControlLogix (required), PLC5 (required), SLC500 (required) and Siemens S7

  • Drives: Parker Eurotherm, AB Powerflex, Siemens S120

  • HMI software; FactoryTalk View Studio, Wonderware Intouch, Panelbuilder32.

  • Data collection systems including Wonderware Historian

  • Knowledge of Safety PLC and associated hardware

  • Knowledgeable with National Electric Code

  • Ability to execute multiple projects with minimal direction

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills among all levels of the organization

  • Hands-on ability to work through symptoms and get to root cause

  • Experience in troubleshooting equipment and process issues

  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic, Function Block Programming and Sequential Text Programming and make system edits as needed.
