Engineer I - Job Summary This position will support the Gas Transmission Integrity Management organization and will influence the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution pipeline systems through the proactive use of asset knowledge, threat identification, knowledge of threat interaction, data integration and analytical tools to increase operational efficiency, improve system integrity and minimize safety risk to employees and the communities we operate in. The Gas Transmission Integrity Management organization is responsible for evaluating the risk and threats to the integrity of the gas transmission system then developing and implementing a strategic integrity management plan for the entirety of the gas transmission pipeline assets. The Integrity engineer is a critical position within the TIMP team to help ensure Dominion Energy maintains safe and reliable pipelines which comply with federal regulations. The Integrity engineer will promote a safety culture throughout all levels of the organization with an emphasis on improving learning from the past and anticipating the future. This role is an entry or developmental level position. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives. The position will be located in the Akron/Cleveland/Canton, OH area.

Additional responsibilities may include:
  • Provides engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline.
  • Performs engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.
  • Provides engineering support of Integrity Management (IM) plan administration, compliance, implementation and documentation.
  • Provides engineering support of individual IM assessments, remediation activity, data analysis.
  • Provides progress metrics on IM activities.
  • Technology and project development supporting IM.
  • Provides engineering support in developing process and materials standards.
  • Provides engineering support and training of other engineers, office staff, and field technicians.
  • Reviews records of pipeline projects.

This role is fully competent in all conventional aspects of the subject matter and is the second level position in the engineering series. Distinguished from Engineer I by increased complexity in application of engineering skills required. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, exercises independence in evaluating, selecting and applying standard or well-defined engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Uses independent judgment in prioritizing and making moderately complex adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require investigation of a limited number of variables. The position will be located in the Akron/Cleveland/Canton, OH area. Additional responsibilities may include:
  • Provides engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline.
  • Performs and/or reviews engineering calculations, analysis, research and design.
  • Provides cost analysis as needed and develops recommendation based on calculations (e.g. cost for equipment upgrade) for management review.
  • Provides engineering support of Integrity Management (IM) plan administration, compliance, implementation and documentation.
  • Provides engineering support of individual IM assessments, remediation activity, data analysis.
  • Provides progress metrics on IM activities.
  • Technology and project development supporting IM.
  • Provides engineering support in developing process and materials standards.
  • Provides engineering support and training of other engineers, office staff, and field technicians.
  • Reviews records of pipeline projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications): Relevant Engineering Experience includes: Engineering, Integrity Management, Quality Management, Cathodic Protection/Corrosion Engineering, Pipeline Compliance, Design/Construction; Industrial/Systems Engineering.

Engineer I:
  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline and 0-2+ years relevant engineering experience.
  • Skills: Computer and applicable software programs. Analytical and abstract thinking. Problem solving. Effective decision-making skills. Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Abilities: Interpret codes, regulations, and practices. Develop project management skills and handle multiple tasks. Develop effective planning, project, and organization skills. Work within a team environment.
  • Must have valid driver's license and be able to drive.

Engineer II:
  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline and 3+ years relevant engineering experience
  • Skills: Planning, organizational and project management skills. Ability to develop and exercise leadership skills. Effective decision-making skills. Effective oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing).
  • Abilities: Perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.). Think analytically and solve complex problems. Interpret codes, regulations and practices. Equally effective working independently or in a team environment. Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Must have valid driver's license and be able to drive.

Preferred Qualifications:

Engineer I:
  • Bachelor's Degree and 2+ years engineering experience.
  • Experience in quality management, industrial/systems engineering, design/construction, pipeline integrity, pipeline design, pipeline operation, pipeline repair or pipeline construction experience; or
  • Experience with integrity methods (in line inspection (ILI), pressure testing, or direct assessment methods) and assessment evaluation; or
  • Experience with cathodic protection practices and principles; or
  • Experience with regulatory compliance at Federal, State, or local levels (DOT, PHMSA, etc.).

Engineer II:
  • Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years directly related experience.
  • 3+ years previous experience in natural gas distribution/transmission pipeline Integrity Management, pipeline design, pipeline operation, pipeline repair or pipeline construction experience; or
  • Experience with integrity methods (in line inspection (ILI), pressure testing, or direct assessment methods) and assessment evaluation; or
  • Experience with cathodic protection practices and principles; or
  • Experience with project coordination/management; or
  • Experience with regulatory compliance at Federal, State, or local levels (DOT, PHMSA, etc.).

Education Requirements REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
