Job DescriptionAvery Dennison is seeking a talented Durables Technical Specialist to join our team. This role is based in Mentor, Ohio, and is part of the Materials Group - North America R&D Team.This role involves interacting with customers and end users and will closely partner with the business development and product managers. The primary responsibility will be managing compliance projects related to commercial products and new product development supporting the High-Value Segment product line (Automotive, Industrial, and Electronics). This role includes the process ownership to obtain UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and BS5609 for Drum Labels recognitions and ensure that the laboratory standards meet ISO17025 requirements; it will also support the lab audit process. Responsible for developing standard methods based on customers' and end users' requirements and ability to test products according to the automotive and ASTM standards.Actively support strategic new product development projects related to pressure-sensitive labels. Implement innovative test methods and effectively manage projects with an intense urgency.
Lead projects related to qualifying commercial products, finished labels, and new products to acquire UL and BS5609 recognitions, including managing the certification process and ensuring compliance with laboratory standards.
Engage with the ecosystem and act as an expert in the automotive, industrial, and electronics segments.
Support ISO17025 and UL lab audits to ensure adherence to quality management and regulatory compliance standards.
Develop and implement test methods according to ASTM, automotive, and other industry standards, demonstrating a solid understanding of scientific and engineering principles.
Partner with the R&D technicians and guide testing plan execution.
Conduct experimental studies, communicate scientific approaches, convey results with data, and present technical analysis to support product approval and adoption through the new product development process.
Support the qualification of films, adhesives, papers, and new product development for targeted customer applications by applying a hands-on approach and scientific principles of adhesion, polymer science, and analytical chemistry with the main focus on Automotive, Industrial, Drums, and Electronics applications.
Support and work globally with other expert engineers, scientists, and lab technicians in projects to develop your expertise. Collaborate with project owners in the early stages to define and scope projects, capturing the voice and needs of the market, customers, and organization.
Support other departments such as QA, marketing, sales, laboratory, and operations with specific product knowledge and expertise.
Contribute and adhere to EHS standards and policies and connect to Avery Dennison's 2030 Sustainability Goals.
Support projects related to capital investments.
Customer-oriented.
Travel: 10% of the time
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in polymer science, chemistry, material science, and chemical engineering is required.
4+ years of industrial experience.
Strong technical background in scientific and engineering knowledge with an emphasis on analytical skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and statistical data analysis.
Excellent facilitation, customer service, relationship building, communication, and project management skills.
Self-directed with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with high accuracy, attention to detail, and organization.
Familiar with ASTM, UL, and BS5609 recognitions, as well as ISO17025 certification and audit procedures.
Experience with Google Docs, Office, and Minitab, as well as the ability to navigate the digital world.
Preferred
Experience with automotive or electronic industries.
Experience with the UL certification process.
Understanding different pressure-sensitive adhesive formulations, including emulsions, solvent acrylics, rubber systems, and silicone PSAs.
