Job Description

Job Summary:

Personnel are required to perform phlebotomy functions as well as specimen processing, order entry, supply ordering and other duties as assigned. Technical duties include waived and moderate complexity testing in the areas of hematology, chemistry, serology and Point of Care. Associate must maintain accurate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedure. Critical thinking, being able to multi-task, and maintain accuracy during periods of frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment. Staff may be required to work at all local Summit Health laboratory locations.

Essential Functions:

Perform phlebotomy procedures and specimen collection following the standards of practice while working within the boundaries of the phlebotomy scope of practice.

Follows established procedures for patient identification, specimen collection and labeling.

Meets all competency requirements and training timelines.

Accurately answer internal/external customer’s questions for proper ordering, collection, and trouble shooting of multiple sample types.

Performs drug screen collection.

Utilize laboratory computer system to obtain demographics, perform order entry, enter pertinent clinical information, generate barcode labels and ensure tracking of each test ordered and each specimen collected and/or received.

Checks patients in and orders lab tests into the Laboratory Information System.

Verify patient insurance and demographics.

Participates in the, faxing, phoning and delivery of results.

Aids in the training of new hires, students and non-lab Summit Health employees.

Cleans equipment and maintains overall neatness and supplies of the laboratory.

Responsible for conducting specimen processing according to established policy and procedure within the department.

Assesses specimen integrity and prepares, package and arranges for transport of specimens appropriately.

Centrifuge, aliquot, separate, freeze, refrigerate for handle specimens as required to maintain specimen integrity according to the requirements meeting standard timeframes.

Complete appropriate forms when applicable.

Uses of multiple resources to track and trouble shoot specimen issues.

Preforms waived testing according to policies and procedure. Ensure Point of Care compliance and training.

Maintains proficiency test records and samples.

Performs accurate and appropriate testing and documentation of specimens received in the laboratory according to established laboratory protocol and procedures

Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.

Communicates and documents results, including alert values according to established protocol.

Assesses specimen integrity, and processes specimens to include racking, loading instruments and creating work lists.

Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control, variances and reports discrepancies to the supervisor.

Notifies supervisor when problems are identified that may adversely affect test performance or reporting.

Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.

Ensures patient test results are not reported until all corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly.

Maintains and trouble shoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient specimens. Ensure Point of Care compliance and training.

Physical Job Requirements:

Endurance (e.g. continuous typing, prolonged standing/bending, walking)

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum of three years of phlebotomy experience and drug screen collection preferred.

Has the ability to perform all testing required at our satellite locations.

Phlebotomy Technician Certification through the National Health Career Association (NHA) required.

CLA Certificate preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA guidelines and laboratory requirements to include skills in phlebotomy techniques with adult, pediatric, and geriatric patients, computer/data entry skills and phone etiquette are required.

Attentions to detail, ability to critically think, multitask, and maintain accuracy during periods of frequent interruptions in a fast-paced environment.

Consistently demonstrate the ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner and read/follow procedures accurately.

Strong leadership skills are preferred.
